{"id":46775,"date":"2025-11-21T00:35:21","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T00:35:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/46775\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T00:35:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T00:35:21","slug":"judge-orders-trump-to-end-national-guard-deployment-in-dc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/46775\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge orders Trump to end National Guard deployment in DC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/19\/us-news\/trump-admin-live-updates-on-epstein-files-us-saudi-investment-forum-more\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A federal judge ordered President Trump<\/a> to bring his monthslong deployment of National Guard troops in the nation\u2019s capital to an end.<\/p>\n<p>US District Judge Jia Cobb, a Biden appointee, approved Washington, DC\u2019s request for a preliminary injunction on Trump\u2019s deployment of troops to the city after concluding the nation\u2019s capital will likely prevail suit against the president.<\/p>\n<p>Cobb put her\u00a0ruling\u00a0on hold until Dec. 11, giving the Trump administration time to appeal.<\/p>\n<p>National Guard troops have been deployed to get a handle on out-of-control crime in Washington. AP<\/p>\n<p>Since Aug. 11, Trump has dispatched over 2,000 National Guard troops as part of an effort to crack down on crime and beautify DC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the President certainly may have some Article II powers to protect federal functioning and property, including in the District, such powers cannot justify the deployment of the DCNG [DC National Guard] in this case,\u201d Cobb wrote in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/71267525\/88\/district-of-columbia-v-trump\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">lengthy opinion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/15\/us-news\/dc-sues-to-block-trumps-unlawful-takeover-of-police-department-as-crackdown-intensifies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DC filed a lawsuit against Trump<\/a> back in September, arguing that his troop deployment was illegal because it did not have Mayor Muriel Bowser\u2019s blessing.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also briefly federalized DC\u2019s Metropolitan Police Department and surged federal law enforcement personnel in the city, who, unlike the National Guard, have the power to arrest.\u00a0The MPD takeover only lasted 30 days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump has dispatched over 2,000 National Guard troops as part of an effort to crack down on crime and beautify DC. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys for the Trump administration argued in court that the president\u2019s executive powers gave him control of the\u00a0local National Guard force and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/01\/us-news\/dc-enacts-citywide-curfew-for-minors-after-weeks-of-violence-unrest\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that the city<\/a> didn\u2019t suffer a serious injury because it cooperated with his team.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/19\/us-news\/trump-admin-live-updates-on-epstein-files-us-saudi-investment-forum-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Follow The Post\u2019s live coverage of President Trump and national politics for the latest news and analysis<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trump has frequently touted his crackdown on crime in DC, which began days after former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) employee\u00a0Edward Coristine, also known as \u201cBig Balls,\u201d was beaten up on the city\u2019s streets after intervening in a carjacking.\u00a0Coristine now works in the Social Security Administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump also briefly federalized DC\u2019s Metropolitan Police Department and surged federal law enforcement personnel in the city, who, unlike the National Guard, have the power to arrest. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump is well within his lawful authority to deploy the National Guard in Washington, DC, to protect federal assets and assist law enforcement with specific tasks,\u201d White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told The Post in response to the judge\u2019s order.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis lawsuit is nothing more than another attempt \u2014 at the detriment of DC residents \u2014 to undermine the President\u2019s highly successful operations to stop violent crime in DC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump has also begun using his crime crackdown in DC as a model for interventions in cities across the country, having <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/18\/us-news\/trump-admin-pushes-supreme-court-to-allow-national-guard-in-chicago-after-judges-rejection\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deployed troops in Memphis,\u00a0Chicago and Portland<\/a>. The courts have since stymied those deployments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump has also begun using his crime crackdown in DC as a model for interventions in cities across the country, having deployed troops in Memphis,\u00a0Chicago and Portland.
