Adam Ottavino lambasted the Mets\u2019 handling of their pitchers<\/a> last season, questioning manager Carlos Mendoza\u2019s use of relief pitchers and organizational protocols, all while suggesting that the Amazin\u2019s weren\u2019t worried enough about preserving their pitchers\u2019 arms.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After rattling off names of Mets pitchers that were injured last season, Ottavino, hosting an episode of his \u201cBaseball & Coffee\u201d<\/a> podcast on Wednesday, implored the team to be \u201cbetter than this.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is embarrassing, this is actually pathetic, like pathetic. I would\u2019ve never let this happen if I was on the team last year,\u201d he said. \u201cAt least half of these guys wouldn\u2019t have blown out. I would have protected these dudes myself; I would have had to jump in front of them myself. <\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, there was nobody willing to stand up and talk to Carlos (Mendoza) this year; it was just me, I guess. So a little bit of an issue there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ottavino spent three seasons with the Mets<\/a> from 2022-24, including one under Mendoza. The ex-big leaguer did acknowledge Mendoza was a good \u201cunder-the-stress manager,\u201d but said things must change.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if they continue down this path, they\u2019re gonna be f\u2013k-e-d, because you cannot injure this many dudes every year,\u201d Ottavino said. \u201cHopefully, this is not an actual strategy because it\u2019s freakin\u2019 pathetic and it\u2019s not player-friendly, and eventually people will catch on.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it\u2019s funny because they were bragging about keeping people healthy the year before, when it had nothing to do with them. So yeah, I\u2019m a little annoyed. Because these are guys that should be playing, so it pisses me off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ottavino continued to explain that part of the issue, in his opinion, stemmed from a lack of \u201cplayer education\u201d on how to keep healthy and \u201cpressure on a lot of guys to play even when they feel a little compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c| think he has no idea what he\u2019s doing when it comes to bullpen guys and how to keep them healthy or even how to care about them at all. There\u2019s no communication there, there\u2019s no feel there, there\u2019s no bedside manner when guys get hurt,\u201d the former Mets and Yankees pitcher said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Mets saw injuries to Tylor Megill<\/a>, Dedniel Nunez, Danny Young, Frankie Montas and Reed Garrett, just to name a few, and they used an MLB-record 46 different pitchers during the 2025 season.\u00a0<\/p>\n
