{"id":46993,"date":"2025-11-21T05:46:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T05:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/46993\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T05:46:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T05:46:11","slug":"georgia-police-chief-arrested-on-stalking-charges-hours-after-announcing-retirement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/46993\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia police chief arrested on stalking charges hours after announcing retirement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A police chief in Georgia was arrested mere hours after he announced his retirement from the force he served for over two decades, for allegedly misusing his department\u2019s technology to stalk and harass people.<\/p>\n<p>The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of Braselton Police Chief Michael Steffman, 49, on Wednesday following a months-long probe completed at the behest of the Jackson County Sheriff\u2019s Office, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/gbi.georgia.gov\/press-releases\/2025-11-19\/gbi-arrests-braselton-police-chief-harassment-and-stalking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Steffman, 49, is accused of misusing law enforcement property to stalk and harass people. Jackson County Sheriff&#8217;s Office<\/p>\n<p>Steffman was the chief of police in Braselton, Ga., until he was arrested. Town of Braselton, Georgia<\/p>\n<p>That same morning, town officials shared that Steffman had resigned and retired from the department for \u201cpersonal reasons,\u201d and the Braselton Police Department\u2019s captain was immediately named interim chief, according to a post shared on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.braselton.net\/news_detail_T6_R195.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">town website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 14, Braselton Mayor Jennifer Scott and the town council all honored Steffman for his two decades of service. He was named the chief of police in May 2025, according to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/michael-steffman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">LinkedIn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Steffman was charged with violating his oath of office, stalking, harassment and several counts of misusing the department\u2019s automated license plate recognition system. <\/p>\n<p>He was taken into custody without incident and booked at the Jackson County Jail, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, though he wasn\u2019t listed in its public records.<\/p>\n<p>Scott said that the entire town was \u201cdisappointed by the circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Georgia Bureau of Investigation launched the investigation after receiving a request from the Jackson County Sheriff\u2019s Office. As we look ahead, our priority remains ensuring the safety and protection of our citizens and maintaining the strong level of public service our community expects,\u201d she said in a statement obtained by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5atlanta.com\/news\/braselton-police-chief-arrested-hours-after-announcing-retirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">Fox 5 Atlanta<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation into Steffman\u2019s alleged misconduct is still open, the bureau said.
