Trump\u2019s National Guard BlunderA brief history of the National Guard in Washington.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m announcing a historic action to \u201cTrump must go now.\u201d Rescue our nation\u2019s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse. \u201cD.C.\u2019s shadow senator raising concerns about what this could mean for taxpayers.\u201d We\u2019re going to take our capital back. We\u2019re taking it back. \u201cThe presence of the National Guard continues in the District.\u201d \u201cThe question here is, what are they doing, necessarily.\u201d \u201cThey just stand around and chitchat with each other.\u201d \u201cTroops are instructed to quote, prepare for a long-term, persistent presence.\u201d \u201cThey seem bored to me.\u201d We\u2019re going to make it safe. The crime numbers are way down. \u201cD.C. leaders contend there is no crisis pointing to crime rates now at a 30-year low.\u201d \u201cTroops are mostly absent from neighborhoods with the highest rates of crime, in Southeast and Northeast D.C.\u201d \u201cWe haven\u2019t seen any of that over here in Southeast D.C.\u201d \u201cThis is not the answer, bringing the National Guard.\u201d \u201cThey\u2019re still patrolling areas like Metro stations and the National Mall.\u201d \u201cThese are National Guardsmen who are standing around tourist sites.\u201d \u201cWhat I\u2019ve seen them doing is standing around underneath the Washington Monument for photo ops.\u201d \u201cIt seems like it\u2019s more of a spectacle for those that are visiting.\u201d \u201cThey\u2019re here essentially for show. There is some kind of morbid humor around it all.\u201d We\u2019ve had some incredible results. It\u2019s like a different place. \u201cD.C. National Guardspeople are cleaning up the parks.\u201d \u201cPicking up trash and pulling weeds.\u201d \u201cCollected more than 500 bags of trash and gotten rid of three truckloads of plant waste. And I don\u2019t think there\u2019s anything wrong with that.\u201d The results have come out \u2014 \u201cAnd morale is falling fast.\u201d \u201cMost of them that I\u2019ve talked to don\u2019t really want to be here either.\u201d We\u2019re going to stay here for a while. We want to make this absolutely perfect. \u201cTroops have been ordered to stay at least through next summer.\u201d \u201cCould stay in D.C. indefinitely.\u201d \u201cAll right. What are we actually doing? What are we paying for as taxpayers?\u201d \u201cIt costs a little bit more than one million dollars a day to have these National Guardsmen here.\u201d \u201cWe do have some breaking news that we want to get to and it comes to us from our nation\u2019s capital. The U.S. federal judge ruled that the deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., is illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n
