STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 The Hotel Castleton was situated in St. George at 185 St. Marks Place, between Hamilton Avenue and Nicholas Street, on a bluff that overlooked New York Harbor.<\/p>\n

It was constructed in 1889 and was destroyed by a fire in 1907.<\/p>\n

The original Hotel Castleton was a grand establishment, built on the site of the former St. Marks Hotel and the \u201cMarble House\u201d of Gilbert L. Thompson. It emerged during a prosperous time when Staten Island was a favored summer retreat for affluent families from New York City. <\/p>\n

The five-and-a-half-story frame building became a prominent local landmark. The Hotel Castleton was one of the last and most magnificent hotels erected during Staten Island\u2019s golden age as a resort destination for city dwellers.<\/p>\n

On Nov. 12, 1907, a fire broke out at the hotel, which was closed for the winter season. The flames illuminated the entire bay and drew a crowd of spectators. The fire completely destroyed the hotel, leaving only the brick chimneys standing. No one was on the premises at the time. The fire was believed to have started in a storeroom adjacent to the barroom. <\/p>\n

CAMBA Housing Ventures<\/a>, or CHV, partnered with Stellar Management to purchase and renovate the then-40-year-old Mitchell-Lama affordable housing complex. The $91 million partnership included the purchase and renovation of two buildings totaling 454 homes and offers a mix of studios and one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. <\/p>\n
