President Trump took off the table the possibility of slashing federal funding for New York and vowed to actually be \u201ca big help\u201d to the city after an extraordinarily cordial meeting<\/a> with Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday.<\/p>\n

The sympatico tone marked a shocking turnaround for Trump, who has for months smeared<\/a> Mamdani as \u201ca communist\u201d and threatened to cut federal funding for New York, flood the city with ICE agents and take other punitive steps after the incoming mayor\u2019s sworn in Jan. 1.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Friday afternoon after a more than hour-long sitdown with Mamdani, Trump said he\u2019s no longer looking to make good on the funding threat and admitted he was \u201cactually surprised\u201d by how \u201crational\u201d the soon-to-be mayor is and how much they agree on.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to be helping him to make everybody\u2019s dream come true, having a strong and very safe New York,\u201d Trump, who was seated behind the Resolute Desk, told reporters as Mamdani stood next to him.<\/p>\n

Mamdani, a democratic socialist who has accused Trump of holding fascist leanings, returned the favor by suggesting he and the Republican commander-in-chief could recreate what President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia did in implementing \u201cNew Deal\u201d reforms<\/a> in the city in the 1930s.<\/p>\n

\u201cThinking about what it can look like when the federal government and New York City government work together to deliver on affordability, it can be transformative,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n

In an especially remarkable moment, Trump interrupted Mamdani after a reporter asked the mayor-elect if he still considers the president \u201ca fascist.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s okay, you can just say yes,\u201d Trump butted in as Mamdani began answering the question. \u201cIt\u2019s easier than explaining it,\u201d Trump added with a chuckle while patting Mamdani on the arm.<\/p>\n

Trump played similarly nice when asked if he\u2019s offended by the fact that Mamdani has labeled him a \u201cdespot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been called much worse than a despot,\u201d he said, \u201cso it\u2019s not that insulting.\u201d<\/p>\n
