President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani struck an unexpectedly warm tone Friday after a private meeting at the White House, praising one another repeatedly and highlighting broad agreement on affordability, housing construction, and public safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve just had a great meeting, a really good, very productive meeting,\u201d Trump said as the two men addressed reporters in the Oval Office. \u201cWe have one thing in common. We want this city of ours that we love to do very well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump congratulated Mamdani on what he called an \u201cincredible\u201d victory, saying the mayor-elect \u201cran an incredible race\u2026 against a lot of smart people.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

He said their earlier discussion focused heavily on rising costs and the need to \u201cget housing built,\u201d adding: \u201cAnything I do is going to be good for New York\u2026 we\u2019re going to be helping him to make everybody\u2019s dream come true \u2014 having a strong and very safe New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani said he appreciated the meeting and that the conversation centered on shared concern for the cost of living. \u201cWe spoke about rent, we spoke about groceries, we spoke about utilities, we spoke about the different ways in which people are being pushed out,\u201d he said. \u201cI appreciated the time with the President\u2026 and I look forward to working together to deliver that affordability for New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nTrump softens earlier attacks<\/p>\n

Mamdani, who campaigned on an aggressive affordability agenda, requested the meeting<\/a> earlier in the week to press the case for residents grappling with the high cost of living.<\/p>\n

Trump, who has repeatedly criticized Mamdani, falsely labeling the Democratic Socialist a \u201ccommunist\u201d during campaign season and threatening to withhold federal funding from the city if Mamdani won, signalled on the eve of the meeting that he expected the talk to be \u201cquite civil.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

When pressed about repeatedly calling Mamdani a communist, Trump said: \u201cHe\u2019s got views out there, but who knows\u2026 some of my views have changed.\u201d He said he was confident Mamdani \u201ccould do a very good job\u201d and suggested the mayor-elect may \u201csurprise some conservative people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump also noted significant crossover support. \u201cHe said a lot of my voters actually voted for him, and I\u2019m okay with that\u2026 that\u2019s pretty good.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Reporters asked Mamdani whether he still believed Trump is a fascist. Before Mamdani could answer, Trump put a hand on his shoulder and said: \u201cI\u2019ve been called much worse than a fascist\u2026 it\u2019s not that insulting. Maybe he\u2019ll change his mind after we get to working together.\u201d<\/p>\n

When another reporter asked again whether Mamdani still stands by the term, Mamdani responded: \u201cI think both President Trump and I, we are very clear about our positions and our views.\u201d
Trump later jokingly told Mamdani that he did not have to explain himself: \u201cIt\u2019s easier than explaining it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Broad agreement on affordability and housing<\/p>\n

Trump said one of the key points he \u201cgleaned very much today\u201d was Mamdani\u2019s desire to reduce rents through large-scale construction. \u201cHe\u2019d like to see them come down, ideally by building a lot of additional housing\u2026 and so do I,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI want to see a lot of houses created, a lot of apartments built.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani said both men repeatedly returned to \u201cwhat it could look like to lift those New Yorkers out of struggle.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

The mayor-elect said his push for property-tax reform is aimed at fixing \u201ca system that is so inequitable that it can\u2019t even stand up in court.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Trump emphasized that he expects to assist, not obstruct, Mamdani\u2019s efforts. \u201cI expect to be helping him, not hurting him \u2014 a big help,\u201d he said. \u201cI love New York City\u2026 I think this mayor could do some things that are going to be really great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nCrime, ICE and policing<\/p>\n

Trump said crime was among their deepest discussions. \u201cHe wants to have a safe New York\u2026 If you don\u2019t have safe streets, it\u2019s not going to be a success,\u201d the president said. \u201cHe wants to get [bad people] out, maybe more than I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani said he intends to maintain the NYPD\u2019s current headcount \u2014 approximately 35,000 officers while reducing the number of mental health calls handled by police. \u201cWe have to make it easier for police to focus on police work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Trump praised Mamdani\u2019s decision to retain the current police commissioner, Jessica Tisch, calling her \u201creally good, really competent,\u201d saying that Tisch had a connection with his daughter Ivanka.<\/p>\n

Foreign policy<\/p>\n

The press conference later ranged into global issues, including Gaza and Ukraine. Mamdani reiterated his criticism of Israel\u2019s military campaign on Gaza, saying: \u201cI\u2019ve spoken about the Israeli government committing genocide, and I\u2019ve spoken about our government funding it.\u201d He said many New Yorkers \u201cwant their tax dollars to go towards the benefit of New Yorkers and their ability to afford basic dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump asserted the United States had \u201cpeace in the Middle East\u2026 for the first time after 3,000 years,\u201d and invited Mamdani to sit in on a future meeting about regional diplomacy. \u201cIf the mayor would like to be here for that meeting\u2026 absolutely,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Asked about Ukraine, Trump argued the war \u201cshould have never happened\u201d and said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will \u201chave to accept something.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Would Trump live in Mamdani\u2019s New York?<\/p>\n

Asked whether he would feel comfortable living in New York City under Mamdani, Trump responded: \u201cYeah, I would, I really would, especially after the meeting. We agree on a lot more than I would have thought\u2026 I want him to do a great job, and we\u2019ll help him do a great job.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing the mayor of New York City is a big deal\u2026 especially now, because I think you\u2019re really at a turning point, one way or the other,\u201d Trump said, adding that it is a job he would have liked.<\/p>\n

Mamdani closed by stressing his commitment to safety across all communities. \u201cI care very deeply about Jewish safety,\u201d he said, pledging to \u201croot out antisemitism across the five boroughs.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the news conference drew to a close, Trump marveled at the intense media attention. \u201cI\u2019ve had a lot of meetings with the heads of major countries; nobody cared,\u201d he said. \u201cBut they did care about this meeting, and it was a great meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n
