STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Daylight Saving Time ends a bit earlier than it has in recent years.

We’ll “fall back” to Standard Time on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 2 a.m., making the Daylight Saving Time period one day shorter than it was last year.

That’s because it always ends on the first Sunday in November, which falls just about as early in the month as possible this year.

However, the earliest possible end to Daylight Saving Time will occur in 2026, when the first Sunday in November falls on Nov. 1.

Once it occurs, we continue to approach the year’s shortest, darkest day, which will take place on Sunday, Dec. 21. This day is known as the winter solstice.

It happens when the Earth’s axial tilt is farthest from the sun, causing the sun to appear at its lowest point in the sky at noon.

But our days will begin to gradually have more minutes of light until we “spring forward” into Daylight Saving Time on March 8, 2026.

This astronomical event of solstice has been celebrated for hundreds of years in many cultures as a symbol of rebirth, hope, and the return of light. Ancient civilizations have honored the solstice with festivals, rituals, and gatherings.

Today, many people use it as a time for reflection, renewal, and connection with nature.

What clocks need changing?

Even as we “fall back” into Standard Time, many of us won’t have much at all. This is because many of the devices we rely on daily, including smartphones, laptops and smartwatches, connect with GPS satellites to keep time and reset themselves. They may also set themselves according to atomic clocks.

Yet there are a few things you may have to change, like clocks in cars, appliances and older clocks that run on batteries.

Grandfather clocks with pendulums are also devices you’ll have to adjust.

And don’t forget home surveillance systems and other devices on timers, like deck and garden lighting and watering systems. Garage doors will need to be set back too, if they are on timers.
