STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 The stretch of Hylan Boulevard from Poillon Avenue to Arbutus Avenue remains closed on Saturday following flooding at the intersection of Wendy Drive<\/a> in Annadale, according to a spokesperson for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.<\/p>\n

As of Saturday morning, crews at the scene were still excavating the site to determine the exact cause of the issue that triggered flooding Friday afternoon, the spokesperson noted.<\/p>\n

Early Friday afternoon, water could be seen gushing from sewer grates and manhole covers at the intersection of Wendy Drive.<\/p>\n

The surge in water, which had a light-brown tint, resulted in road buckling in a few spots at the scene. Among the most notable buckles was one directly in front of the driveway of St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School.<\/p>\n

The Department of Environmental Protection responded to the site and closed off the boulevard; traffic was subsequently rerouted to local streets.<\/p>\n

Traffic began building up in the area by 3:30 p.m. Around that time, it took nearly 18 minutes to get from Hylan Boulevard to Amboy Road using Poillon Avenue. As of noon Saturday, traffic congestion persisted at the intersection.<\/p>\n

All houses in the area had water on Friday, according to the Department of Environmental Protection. However, Borough President Vito Fossella, who was on the scene, told the Advance\/SILive.com that he heard from the department that some residences in the area could possibly experience discolored water from rust and other materials. Anyone experiencing discolored water is urged to call 311 and the Department of Environmental Protection so that fire hydrants could be opened in order to flush out the potentially contaminated water.<\/p>\n

It remains unknown at this time how long Hylan Boulevard will remain closed.<\/p>\n
