STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 A Staten Island motorist submitted video over concern that a bicyclist did not equip visible lights onto his bike while riding at dusk on Hylan Boulevard.<\/p>\n
The short video, captured recently on Hylan Boulevard in the vicinity of Tysens Lane in New Dorp shows a line of vehicles stopped at the light, including what appears to be an e-bike.<\/p>\n
As the light turns green, the vehicles proceed forward. The bicyclist is seen riding in the bus lane at a cautious pace. While the rider can be seen with a helmet, the bike does not appear to display any visible lights.<\/p>\n
The individual who submitted the video expressed concern over the proximity of a vehicle seen riding closely behind the bicyclist and suggested they invest in some lights for improved visibility.<\/p>\n
It is New York State law<\/a> that every bicycle in use between one half hour after sunset and one half hour before sunrise must be equipped with a white lamp on the front, which can emit light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet and a red or amber light visible to those behind from a distance of 300 feet. The law further indicates that at least one of those two lights must be visible from 200 feet on each side.<\/p>\n This summer, it was reported by ABC7<\/a> that the NYPD was cracking down on bike traffic laws.<\/p>\n In the first quarter of the year, police had only issued 561 tickets for cycling violations.
