Democratic Sen. John Fetterman is breaking<\/a> with veteran party strategist James Carville, arguing that Democrats should \u201cwin more elections\u201d rather than change the rules. His remarks come as a response to Carville\u2019s recent calls to pack the Supreme Court and confront the party\u2019s \u201cidentity left.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI strongly rejected trying to pack the Supreme Court or to change those things,\u201d Fetterman said on \u201cSaturday in America.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I ran for the Senate back in the \u201821, \u201922, I rejected those things,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The difference in opinion between Carville and Fetterman underscores a growing divide within the Democratic Party between reformers and moderates who want to maintain existing institutions.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Carville appeared on \u201cSaturday in America\u201d and voiced support for adding four liberal justices to the Supreme Court if Democrats retake the White House in 2028, saying the party should consider expanding the court to 13 justices.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the lowest the Supreme Court has been rated, and if you believe, as I do, that we need faith in not just the executive or the congressional branch of government, but the Supreme Court,\u201d Carville said. \u201cAnd it is not written anywhere in the Constitution that you have to have nine [justices]. That\u2019s just a number they came up with.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Democratic strategist argued<\/a> that increasing the number of justices would be the fastest way to \u201cget some balance on the court.\u201d<\/p>\n

During that Nov. 15 \u201cSaturday in America\u201d appearance, Carville responded to the idea that Fetterman is a top Democratic talent, saying, \u201cIf John Fetterman is the smartest person in the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party is in really, really, really deep trouble. Really deep trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Fetterman disagreed, saying the party shouldn\u2019t rewrite longstanding rules for short-term political gain.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were the Democrats,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like, you don\u2019t change the rules if you didn\u2019t win. It\u2019s, like, \u2018Win more elections,\u2019 and then you are able to change those dynamics the way it was designed to be in the Constitution right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fetterman has repeatedly positioned himself as one of the party\u2019s more moderate voices, breaking from Democrats on the record-shattering government shutdown and condemning socialism despite recent wins in places like New York City.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Democratic Sen.
