The Trump administration<\/a> is retreating from threats it made to defund New York City<\/a> should a socialist candidate win its mayoral election.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the days leading up to the November election, President Donald Trump repeatedly vowed he would cut federal funding if then-mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani secured the victory.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0in the wake of a surprisingly cordial meeting Trump held with Mamdani over the weekend, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett on Sunday suggested Trump would \u201cwait and see\u201d what direction Mamdani chooses to take the city before making the decision. <\/p>\n

Since Mamdani won the election, the Trump administration has been \u201creassured\u201d by some of his decisions, including his move to retain the city\u2019s police commissioner despite the democratic socialist\u2019s past criticisms of law enforcement, Hassett added, saying that \u201cwe are sure hopeful\u201d the president and mayor can work together.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hassett\u2019s comments came during a CNN interview<\/a>, when host Jake Tapper said: \u201cRight before the election, President Trump threatened to withhold federal funding from New York City if Mamdani were elected. Was that just all bluster? He didn\u2019t mean it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hassett replied:\u00a0 \u201cWell, it feels like he doesn\u2019t mean it now, and I guess it, we\u2019ll have to wait and see what Mamdani does. I think that we are really reassured that he has kept the police commissioner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump similarly praised Mamdani for retaining police commissioner Jessica Tisch last Friday, saying she is a friend of his daughter, Ivanka.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey say she\u2019s really good, really competent, and he just retained her. So that\u2019s a good sign,\u201d the president told reporters<\/a> as Mamdani stood alongside him in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n

Referencing previous suggestions he\u2019d defund the city if \u201ccommunist\u201d Mamdani was elected, Trump said he had made the threat in the event \u201cwe didn\u2019t get along,\u201d saying he didn\u2019t \u201cwant good money going after bad.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want that to happen. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s going to happen. I did say that, you know, subject to what policies are being said, we had a meeting today that actually surprised me. He wants to see no crime. He wants to see housing being built. He wants to see rents coming down. All things that I agree with,\u201d the president said. \u201cI expect to be helping him, not hurting him, a big help, because I want New York City to be great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hassett said Friday that he hadn\u2019t seen \u201cstrong\u201d proposals from Mamdani about how to implement those ideas, saying the Trump administration is \u201dat times disagreeing\u201d with the mayor about how to expand affordability.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I think that the objective of making life better for everybody is something that a lot of people share on the Democratic and Republican side,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cIn previous administrations in New York, we\u2019ve seen Law and Order really goes south\u2026. I\u2019ve lived in New York quite a while\u2026.and New York always feels like the safety is on the edge.
