UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (PIX11) \u2014 Rats, traffic helicopters, sidewalk sheds and scaffolding are some of New York City residents\u2019 biggest complaints.<\/p>\n
One particular building on the Upper West Side at 51 West 86th St.<\/a> had scaffolding on the front for nearly 20 years. That scaffolding finally came down recently, and tenants were out in the lobby to celebrate.<\/p>\n More Local News <\/a><\/p>\n \u201cOh, happy day!\u201d tenant Ellen Adler told PIX11 News. \u201cAll of us are just astonished every time we leave the building.\u201d<\/p>\n Since 2006, the pedestrian shed and scaffolding had been affixed for required repairs to the building\u2019s fa\u00e7ade. But tenants never saw any of the repair work happening.<\/p>\n Instead, they banded together to get local media, like PIX11 News, as well as politicians involved in the fight<\/a>. Some time after, the scaffolding was finally removed.<\/p>\n \u201cWe won the Sheddie Award<\/a> for the longest shed up in New York City,\u201d tenant Lianne Ritchie said. \u201cThere are people doing something about it now.\u201d<\/p>\n Councilmember Gale Brewer, as well as Senator and Manhattan Borough President-elect Brad Hoylman-Sigal<\/a>, were there for the festivities.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve never been to a shed taking-down ceremony,\u201d Brewer said to the crowd. \u201cIt\u2019s an example of community, leadership, tenacity and everything you can think of that\u2019s grit on the Upper West Side.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis shed was up for three mayors, two popes and the entire Taylor Swift era,\u201d Hoylman-Sigal said.<\/p>\n Another politician instrumental in getting the scaffolding removed was State Representative Micah Lasher.<\/p>\n Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
