Subscribe to our <a href=\"https:\/\/link.silive.com\/join\/6fm\/signup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/link.silive.com\/join\/6fm\/signup\">Beyond the Classroom newsletter.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I7FJPVCN7FEJ3OW3TWHFU5DQA4\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 A Staten Island elementary school honored approximately a dozen local veterans during a celebration earlier this month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UQKVTNQJDVBJ7OS627EDGOXRUQ\">PS 54 in Willowbrook hosted its second annual Veterans Day Celebration on Nov. 5, to honor local veterans who have served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UGYTR5C4CZAMNPJX5LKID7WERU\">\u201cIt is our privilege to pay homage to the men and women who have served our country,\u201d said Andrea DeMaso, PS 54 Veterans Day committee coordinator. \u201cWe are so thankful for their dedication and sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"PS 54 Veterans Day Celebration\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2HBMMESYKRFV3NKWZNQJWKLYGU.jpeg\"  \/>\u201cIt is our privilege to pay homage to the men and women who have served our country,\u201d said Andrea DeMaso, PS 54 Veterans Day committee coordinator. \u201cWe are so thankful for their dedication and sacrifice.\u201d(Courtesy of Debbie Sander)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4TF2XQXF4FFB7NO7DTFGLPJBZA\">The morning began with a veterans breakfast in the teachers caf\u00e9, followed by a walk of honor through the school\u2019s decorated first-floor hallway, which was created by students and staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CNY7X6C6SRCZNMFHAWFAOFRIQ4\">The celebration concluded with a Veterans Day assembly in the school\u2019s auditorium, which featured a Color Guard presentation, a performance by the school choir, and a slideshow highlighting veterans from the PS 54 community.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"PS 54 Veterans Day Celebration\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IBXXU6AVQ5B77N3K6RZEQTXROI.jpeg\"  \/>About a dozen local veterans were honored the annual event.(Courtesy of Marcia Marbury Kilpatrick)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AVGWMXBLRVBJPN4YB5E7Q6JJXU\">Active servicemember Alan Bermego delivered the keynote address, reflecting on the importance of service, remembrance, and community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N6ONOU4EIBAZNFT2K7IA547QKA\">\u201cThis event helps our students understand what it truly means to serve,\u201d said DeMaso. \u201cIt builds bridges between generations and strengthens the bonds that make our community so special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DNPMDOPZANAHDN24EPCUE2WLYM\">The school also welcomed representatives from VFW 421, VFW Blazing Star Post 1574, Gold Star Post 1365, Rolling Thunder Chapter 2 NY, and the POW\/MIA Committee.
