{"id":52014,"date":"2025-11-25T19:39:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T19:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/52014\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T19:39:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T19:39:11","slug":"interfaith-leaders-on-staten-island-unite-against-religious-intolerance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/52014\/","title":{"rendered":"Interfaith leaders on Staten Island unite against religious intolerance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GT5FPI6DR5C7XMEAHYA2MXNNSI\">STATEN ISLAND, NY &#8212; Religious leaders from across Staten Island gathered in Willowbrook on Tuesday to condemn hate and celebrate religious freedom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"D5WSWPXYBJEOPEK4XAFNABYRZY\">The interfaith leaders were joined by Borough President Vito Fossella, District Attorney Michael McMahon and Assemblymember Sam Pirozzolo, a Republican who represents Mid-Island, on the steps of Young Israel of Staten Island to express their support for protecting the rights of people to practice their faith freely. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6YI2YKPCGJBSXNUOORKHGACNTY\">Fossella tied the gathering to the celebration of Thanksgiving, and how the Pilgrims left England in search of religious freedoms. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"72JQWOBZDVBZ3NCFAQBJ2AXRFQ\">\u201cThere\u2019s talk about when the Pilgrims first came here, they were seeking religious freedom. They came together, and around this time of year, they celebrated a harvest to give thanks and gratitude for all the blessings in their life,\u201d he stated. \u201cNothing has really changed in these last few hundred years. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/protest-manhattan-synagogue-antisemitic-11202025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/protest-manhattan-synagogue-antisemitic-11202025\/\">amNewYork, there were videos of the event where <\/a>anti-Israel protestors could be heard saying \u201cGlobalize the intifada,\u201d \u201cDeath to the IDF\u201d and \u201cResistance \u2026 take another settler out.\u201d It was reported that the demonstration ended with no arrests. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2C4Y5RRPBVGQBMBEEYCZI3EAQM\">\u201cWhat happened the other day up on the East Side of Manhattan at that synagogue is unacceptable, and it is not to be tolerated. People are simply going about their American right,\u201d stated District Attorney Michael McMahon. \u201cBut it\u2019s more than that, it\u2019s a human right. (Advance\/SILive.com | Jan Somma-Hammel) STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"77KHEAJZJJCJLJUPPSDSI2AZ3U\">McMahon, along with Pirozzolo, emphasized Staten Island\u2019s zero-tolerance approach to prosecuting hate crimes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KIHKHM74EVF5PAQFRBWMNH5ZWA\">\u201cIf you\u2019re going to do something that\u2019s hate filled, we\u2019re going to come after you, we\u2019re going to find you, we\u2019re going to get you, and we\u2019re going to prosecute you,\u201d Pirozzolo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PZSX2JUFN5FI3KMXGAFLICFNG4\">Msgr. I speak for our Catholic priests and people in saying no hatred is allowed, only peace and joy,\u201d said the parish leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GHSTYMDJBBHP3GS5LV7YHKBHCY\">\u201cThere is no room for hate crime and discrimination in this land,\u201d added Gurdev Singh Kang of the Sikh community. \u201cGod bless America. God bless all New Yorkers. We want to keep peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WN6CYFA5AVGY5JY2Q5HC4GLOAU\">\u201cWe stand here united. We\u2019ve been at these stairs before, unfortunately, too many times for this kind of hating, but also we have still stood together in times of celebrations,\u201d Imam Tahir Kukaj, a clergy leader for the Albanian and Muslim community on Staten Island, told the Advance\/SILive.com after the press conference. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DZXMJMVF5VFD3NRJXGZAPG5RNI\">Rabbi Yaakov Lehrfield of Young Israel, who hosted the event, expressed his gratitude for the support and assured attendees that the interfaith community is a strong one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WQQDGMDGTVBOTOBVHHMN5TFOYM\">\u201cThey have set up, which happens all the time, round table meetings with leaders of interfaith, and we meet and we talk, and all of us get along beautifully,\u201d he said. \u201cWe get along fine.
