{"id":52754,"date":"2025-11-26T10:48:17","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T10:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/52754\/"},"modified":"2025-11-26T10:48:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T10:48:17","slug":"mamdanis-transition-committee-for-education-who-made-the-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/52754\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani\u2019s transition committee for education: Who made the list?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/ckbe.at\/4g9eqIV\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/ckbe.at\/4g9eqIV\">Chalkbeat New York\u2019s free daily newsletter<\/a> to get essential news about NYC\u2019s public schools delivered to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Of the nearly 40 people Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani tapped for his youth and education transition committee, notably absent were principals, teachers, and students who are currently in New York City\u2019s K-12 system. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Mamdani, who announced the names to his transition teams Monday, centered his campaign on an affordability agenda, including free child care, but had little to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2025\/09\/05\/zohran-mamdani-nyc-mayor-race-public-school-improvement-policy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">say about improving the nation\u2019s largest school system.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Several advocates from the world of child care policy and school integration made the list, along with higher education leaders and some former high-level officials from Bill de Blasio\u2019s administration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">The members of the 17 transition committees will work on helping Mamdani\u2019s new administration make personnel decisions and provide policy guidance, so the 34-year-old Queens state assemblyman can hit the ground running when he takes office on Jan. 1. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Whereas Mayor Eric Adams tapped several Bloomberg administration officials on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2021\/12\/3\/22816498\/nyc-mayor-adams-education-transition-team-members\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his education transition team<\/a>, Mamdani\u2019s list includes some Education Department officials from de Blasio\u2019s tenure, including Josh Wallack, who oversaw the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2025\/11\/06\/mamdani-universal-child-care-plans-balance-speed-and-stability\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">city\u2019s massive free prekindergarten expansion<\/a>; Edie Sharp, who served as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2018\/5\/30\/21105127\/schools-chancellor-richard-carranza-picks-a-chief-of-staff-with-close-ties-to-city-hall\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chancellor Richard Carranza\u2019s chief of staff<\/a>; and Karin Goldmark, a deputy chancellor of school planning and development who now runs GreenLink Education, a nonprofit that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2025\/10\/14\/nyc-schools-solar-power-federal-tax-credit-deadline\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> helps schools tackle sustainability efforts<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Some other notable committee members include: teachers union President Michael Mulgrew; Mark Dunetz, a former high school teacher and principal who now runs the New Visions for Public Schools network; and Sharon Greenberger, the president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater New York who was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2008\/11\/17\/21084521\/chief-school-builder-is-a-seasoned-city-planner-and-park-slope-mom\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">head of the School Construction Authority<\/a> and then the Education Department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2010\/11\/30\/21087471\/black-s-second-introduction-of-the-day-is-to-education-staffers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chief operating officer under Bloomberg<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Inspiration, advice, and best practices for the classroom \u2014 learn from teachers like you.<\/p>\n<p>Across all of our bureaus, Chalkbeat reporters interview educators with interesting, effective approaches to teaching students and leading their schools. Get the best of How I Teach sent to your inbox for free every month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Mamdani, who has mentioned concerns about school segregation in a city with among the most segregated schools in the nation, also tapped for the committee Nyah Berg, the director of Appleseed New York, an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2024\/10\/16\/nyc-high-school-admissions-sorts-students-by-race-poverty-and-disability\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> integration<\/a> advocacy group, and Matt Gonzales, of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2025\/09\/05\/zohran-mamdani-nyc-mayor-race-public-school-improvement-policy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Yorkers for Racially Just Public Schools<\/a>. Gonzales previously served on de Blasio\u2019s School Diversity Advisory Group, or SDAG, which advised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2019\/8\/26\/21108760\/school-diversity-group-nyc-should-phase-out-gifted-programs-curb-selective-screening-in-admissions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">phasing out gifted and talented programs<\/a> and curtailing selective admissions.
