Church, New Brighton. The event will include prayers devoted to Day\u2019s canonization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"X5CDGU7BSVB4TEXNYXHZUGJ6N4\">Day, who died at age 83, continues to be evaluated for sainthood in the Catholic Church and is recognized as a Servant of God, the first step in the multi-stage canonization process. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M3QD7ZJDGJGHNPJPTWT2JA7CHY\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dorothydayguild.org\/cause-for-canonization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Dorothy Day Guild<\/a> is conducting an extensive review of her written works \u2014 a process slowed by the quantity of material, said Ann-Louise DePalo, co-president of the Catholic Worker of Staten Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UUQN2QMBQBGRRJWGGMTHCZLMBA\">\u201cDorothy was an incredibly prolific writer,\u201d DePalo explained. \u201cHer contributions include everything from reflections and columns to numerous books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CYUIAGDFH5AU5AVHUMRADZDMSY\">The canonization process includes four stages: Servant of God, Venerable, Blessed and Saint. She was baptized at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Tottenville following her conversion to Catholicism in 1927. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VJ6HMCTUVNGDHGYENUEGCB73E4\">She spent her summers at Annadale Beach and lived at her house on the corner of Zephyr and Poillon avenues. Along with Catholic Worker co-founder Peter Maurin, she ran a cooperative farm on Bloomingdale Road in Pleasant Plains from 1950 to 1964. Later in life, she spent summers at Spanish Camp in Annadale. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ADVI26ZQF5CRBHVQHO36XKE6EY\"><a href=\"https:\/\/catholicworker.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Catholic Worker Movement<\/a> began in 1933 during the Great Depression when Day, influenced by Peter Maurin\u2019s philosophy and her Catholic faith, published the first issue of \u201cThe Catholic Worker.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PQFNIAHNBJACXAO4NMJQMK6M3Q\">Sold for a penny, the paper became a voice for economic justice, pacifism and workers\u2019 rights. It helped spark a nationwide movement focused on direct service and nonviolence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PDVQEHCKJ5GPHIVBBEKYCYKC5E\">As the movement expanded, Day, a professed anarchist, became regarded as one of the most influential Catholic lay leaders of the 20th century. She embraced the church\u2019s \u201cpreferential option for the poor\u201d and supported distributism as an alternative to both socialism and capitalism. During World War II, The Catholic Worker promoted pacifism and backed conscientious objectors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RJLJO5DPXJHBBMWDJWLSVDTF7A\">Day died of heart failure on Nov. 29, 1980, at the House of Hospitality on Manhattan\u2019s Lower East Side. The Staten Island chapter, founded two years ago by Deborah Sucich, is headquartered at St. Peter\u2019s Church. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OUBKEA7BZFATJFZACAQ6ZYT5AU\">The organization hosts a monthly community meal for residents facing financial hardship. Volunteers serve lunch every Wednesday after the food pantry closes, and members distribute sandwiches at Tappan Park in Stapleton on the last Saturday of each month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AVU2227AJFA57KOZWMLSCG432E\">Bishop Peter Byrne provides spiritual direction for the chapter and will lead Saturday\u2019s Mass. DePalo said the group has also been in contact with Councilman Frank Morano to discuss several potential proposals to honor Day\u2019s legacy, including a street sign, a commemorative marker and a community garden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BJBZ7EU3QREVHDPBEMQ6YABRCU\">The group welcomes donations and volunteers as it works to secure a permanent home, DePalo noted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BKJYTDW6VFERJGNLHEX3ZL7MWE\">\u201cWe\u2019re working to bring more attention to Dorothy\u2019s life and cause, encourage prayers for her beatification, and highlight the ongoing mission of the Catholic Worker,\u201d DePalo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QBEP35KPTBCLRGQMQPTSEFL6PI\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">St. Peter\u2019s R.C.
