In another section of the exhibit is the Hudson Canyon\u2019s Edge, which houses a replica of\u00a0 the east coast\u2019s largest submarine canyon<\/a> located approximately 100 miles southeast of the Statue of Liberty.\u00a0It serves as a satellite research facility by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to educate visitors about the importance of protecting the endangered Atlantic Sturgeon<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cAscarium\u201d served two purposes: to celebrate Halloween and to expose children to environmental issues that affect waterways, which is truly scary.<\/p>\n With colorfully painted faces from the face painting tent, Saama Shaikh and her family members were also excited to see the shark exhibit, which they said was their favorite of all the attractions.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you go out with your friends and go trick or treating, it\u2019s not going to be as much fun as you\u2019re having here,\u201d said Shaikh.\u00a0<\/p>\n Founded in 1896 in Castle Clinton, the NYA moved to the Bronx Zoo before moving to its current home in Coney Island in 1957. It is the oldest continually operating aquarium in the U.S. and the only full-scale aquarium in New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n Located off the boardwalk at Coney Island, the NYA sits on 14 acres along the Atlantic Coast at 602 Surf Ave. It is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. NYA serves more than 750,000 visitors annually.<\/p>\n NYA is a part of the Wildlife Conservation Society<\/a>, which manages the world\u2019s largest network of urban wildlife parks which includes the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo and Queens Zoo.<\/p>\n According to NYA, they strive to make a connection between their visitors and the oceans, focusing on field research their scientists are doing offshore in the waters of New York and around the globe. The scientists\u2019 work in their Conservation Program \u2014 including shark and whale tagging, ecological monitoring and protection of local habitat \u2014 continues a legacy of ocean science at the aquarium.\u00a0<\/p>\n With seven exhibits<\/a> and six experiences<\/a>, including the Aquatheater, PlayQuarium, 4D Theater, \u201cSharks!\u201d and more, there\u2019s plenty to see and do throughout the year in any weather.
