Even though she recently experienced some horrid health issues, Jenny McCarthy<\/a> is feeling grateful ahead of the holidays.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had nine surgeries this year, on my mouth,\u201d \u201cThe Masked Singer\u201d judge, 53, told\u00a0People<\/a> this week. \u201cI had one infection that turned into another and another, and then I had these growths show up on my eyeballs.\u201d<\/p>\n

She blamed these troubles on a ceramic dental implant that went wrong<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy teeth were falling out,\u00a0implants falling out<\/a>,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

She eventually had the issue resolved by doctors, revealing they \u201chad to dig into my jawbone and chipped away, and found I had a deep bone infection. I\u2019ve been on antibiotics for a year and have had to eat soft foods only.\u201d<\/p>\n

McCarthy\u2019s dental woes persisted after shooting her annual holiday card with husband, Donnie Wahlberg.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had two more mouth surgeries even after that photo was taken,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve been pretty unlucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dental implants<\/a> are often used to restore someone\u2019s ability to chew food and provide support for crowns, dentures and other prosthetics.<\/p>\n

These implants generally consist of three parts \u2014 the implant post (the root), the abutment (the connector) and the crown (the visible tooth).<\/p>\n

While implants have a 95% success rate, according to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry<\/a>, there\u2019s still room for error.<\/p>\n

A failed dental implant will feel loose or painful<\/a>, potentially making chewing difficult<\/a> or spurring gum inflammation or swelling. Here\u2019s a look at the problems that can fuel a failed one.<\/p>\n

Infection<\/p>\n

Most likely the cause of McCarthy\u2019s struggles, an infection from bacterial plaque<\/a> can affect the tissues around the implant.<\/p>\n

Also called peri-implantitis, this infection can cause inflammation of the gums and even lead to bone loss.<\/p>\n

Infections can be prevented by keeping the area as free of bacteria as possible. Anti-microbial mouthwashes help. Infections can be treated<\/a> with antibiotics. <\/p>\n

Failed integration<\/p>\n

Around 5% to 10% of failures occur when the implant doesn\u2019t fuse with the bone, a process called failed osseointegration<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The jawbone needs to be strong enough to support the parts of the implant and can weaken due to poor bone density<\/a> or excessive pressure.<\/p>\n

Smoking<\/p>\n

A cigarette or tobacco habit can also poorly affect oral health.<\/p>\n

Not only do they cause bad breath, but cigarettes can lead to tooth decay or periodontitis<\/a>, a serious gum infection that can trigger severe pain and tooth loss.<\/p>\n

Smoking can also restrict blood flow<\/a>, which then cuts off the supply of oxygen and other nutrients to the bone and gum tissue, increasing the risk of tooth loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Medical conditions<\/p>\n

Underlying health issues can cause your body to reject a dental implant.<\/p>\n

These conditions<\/a> can include uncontrolled diabetes, osteoporosis, autoimmune diseases and certain kinds of cancer.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s recommended to share a full medical history with doctors before receiving implants, even dental ones.<\/p>\n

Tooth grinding<\/p>\n

Clinically known as bruxism<\/a>, unknowingly clenching or smashing teeth eventually wears them down.<\/p>\n

This habit can also prevent an implant from properly fusing with the bone, making it unstable<\/a>.<\/p>\n
