The Long Island teen who killed his ex-girlfriend in a botched murder-suicide <\/a>was heartbroken about their \u201cpuppy love\u201d coming to an end, a family friend told The Post.<\/p>\n

Emily Finn, 18, was in her first year of college, while the boy, whose name The Post is withholding, was making plans to join the military, leading the pair to end their teenage romance, the source explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was young puppy love that stopped making sense. It wasn\u2019t going to work. Most of these young relationships don\u2019t,\u201d the friend, who declined to share their name, but noted they knew the alleged killer since he was 4 years old, said outside the boy\u2019s family home Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know where this went wrong and what led to such an extreme reaction,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are in the comments like, \u2018she must\u2019ve done something to him,\u2019 No, she didn\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Now, the teen is spending his 18th birthday and Thanksgiving in a hospital bed, recovering from a gunshot wound to the face and awaiting murder charges.<\/p>\n

He allegedly gunned down Finn inside his Nesconset home around 11:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Suffolk County Police<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

A family friend said the teen took the violent measure because he was heartbroken by a recent breakup. James Messerschmidt<\/p>\n

Finn was reportedly returning some of the boy\u2019s belongings to him following their recent breakup \u2014 a heartbreak he was not equipped to handle.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe frontal lobe is still undeveloped and not equipped to handle and process these emotions. I went through breakups when I was younger and they\u2019re awful but I never contemplated doing anything like this,\u201d the friend said, adding that he was \u201cdisgusted\u201d by the boy\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s ultimately what this was. The inability of a young kid to process this. It feels like the world is coming to an end.\u201d<\/p>\n

The teen purportedly had shown no signs of violence leading up to the murder.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis parents are very, very, very angry. It\u2019s not a situation of, \u2018My kid, my kid., No they\u2019re holding him accountable,\u201d the friend said, adding that they haven\u2019t been inside the house since the tragedy: \u201cThey can\u2019t come home. How would you be able to walk back into that house?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The alleged killer survived the attempted suicide and is spending his 18th birthday in a hospital bed. James Messerschmidt<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily is dead. Her family is destroyed. These people lost their lives in an instant.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Finn\u2019s grieving family declined to speak when approached by The Post Thursday, but an online fundraiser launched in the wake of her death described her as \u201ca true treasure of a girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo know Emily is to love her, as she became part of the fabric of the lives she touched in her generous and kind way. Through her many years as a dancer, the children she taught as she prepared for a future as a teacher, and simply as a friend to so many, she will be sorely missed by all who knew her,\u201d the fundraiser read.<\/p>\n

Police have not yet<\/a> publicly identified the alleged killer, but said he will be charged with second-degree murder and arraigned at a later date.<\/p>\n
