Photo: Mary Frost, Brooklyn Eagle<\/p>\n<p>CITYWIDE \u2014 MANHATTAN COUNCILMEMBER JULIE Menin said Wednesday she has secured at least 36 votes to become the next New York City Council speaker, surpassing the 26 needed, positioning herself as a counterweight to Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani\u2019s ambitious agenda,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/26\/nyregion\/julie-menin-nyc-city-council.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports the New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn Councilmember Crystal Hudson, a progressive seen as a potential ally to Mamdani, conceded after her coalition of left-leaning peers failed to sway enough votes. In a statement, she said her Speaker bid \u201chas been rooted in the principles of honesty, integrity, action, and accountability,\u201d anchored in her lived experiences \u201cas a gay, Black woman raised in Brooklyn by a single mother.\u201d Hudson said it was \u201ca true honor to run,\u201d adding that \u201cmy colleagues have made their choice clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Menin, who would be the Council\u2019s first Jewish speaker, signaled support for scrutinizing corporate actors and shifting some mental-health responses away from police.
