{"id":5620,"date":"2025-10-16T22:45:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T22:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/5620\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T22:45:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T22:45:10","slug":"dem-scheme-to-move-elections-outside-nyc-to-even-years-upheld-by-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/5620\/","title":{"rendered":"Dem scheme to move elections outside NYC to even years upheld by court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most odd-year elections in New York outside of the Big Apple will now shift to even years, the Empire State\u2019s highest court ruled in a decision handed down Thursday \u2014 prompting a top GOP lawmaker to blast Democrats for \u201crigging\u201d the system. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycourts.gov\/ctapps\/Decisions\/2025\/Oct25\/66opn25-Decision.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">In a unanimous decision<\/a>, the Court of Appeals smacked down an attempt by Republican-controlled counties to rebuff the law passed in the Democratic-controlled state legislature that would move virtually all local odd-year elections outside New York City to even years.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.42817294;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37402955\" width=\"843\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/exterior-view-new-york-court-113589276.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior of the New York Court of Appeals building in Albany, New York.\" class=\"wp-image-37402955\"  \/>New York\u2019s highest court upheld legislation that would move odd-year elections to even years. AP<\/p>\n<p>Democrats pushed the measure to bring races for local offices in line with midterm and presidential years, ostensibly as a way to increase turnout for those races.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy aligning local elections with the state and federal calendar, we\u2019re making it easier for New Yorkers to participate in government. At a time when voting rights are under attack across the nation, New York is proudly moving in the opposite direction,\u201d Gov. Kathy Hochul wrote in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans argue that changing the local election cycles drowns candidates\u2019 ability to run on local issues and was motivated as a way to help Democrats succeed in races that have seen traditionally lower turnout.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlbany Democrats will stop at nothing to change the rules for their benefit. They can\u2019t win local elections on the issues that matter most to our communities so they continue to try to rig the system in their favor,\u201d Assemblyman Matt Slater (R-Dutchess), ranking member of the Assembly Elections Committee, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling was authored by Judge Michael Garcia, an appointee of former Gov.
