What if the machines stop working? How do we go back to monitor that patient?\u201d Nancy Hagans, president of the New York State Nurses Association, said at the Nov. 18 meeting.<\/p>\n<p>New York State Nurses Association President Nancy Hagan called \u201cartificial intelligence\u201d in hospitals \u201cartificial care\u201d.  YouTube \/ NYCCouncil<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of time, the hospitals want to come out with everything, with those AI, but we\u2019re not part of the decision making,\u201d added Hagans, who has worked at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn for over 30 years. \u201cAnd we need to be part of the decision making, because it\u2019s affecting how we care for our patients, and we are the one at the bedside delivering care all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The longtime nurse recounted a recent terrifying incident at Maimonides when staff arrived to find devices hooked to patients\u2019 skulls in the ICU by a pharmaceutical company, without warning, training or protocols.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do we do? What if the machines stop working? How do we go back to monitor that patient?\u201d Hagans questioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of time, the hospitals want to come out with everything, with those AI, but we\u2019re not part of the decision making, and we need to be part of the decision making, because it\u2019s affecting how we care for our patients, and we are the one at the bedside delivering care all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mount Sinai has invested \u201cuntold millions\u201d into healthcare AI. Robert Miller<\/p>\n<p>Denash Forbes, the NYSNA director at large and a nurse at Mount Sinai West for nearly four decades, criticized her employer and its significant investment of \u201cuntold millions\u201d into healthcare AI technology, and attacked Mount Sinai\u2019s latest innovation, which she claims is creating more work, and less oversight for its human counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hospital system proudly celebrates Sofiya, the latest AI assistant in Mount Sinai\u2019s cardiac catheterization lab. Nurses have to check Sofiya\u2019s work to make sure she hasn\u2019t made a mistake,\u201d Forbes said.<\/p>\n<p>Robbie Freeman, Mount Sinai\u2019s chief digital transformation officer, shared that the hospital hopes to \u201cleverage AI as a supportive tool to enhance clinical decision-making\u2014not to replace it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen hospitals try to cut corners like this to save patient care. Mistakes are made, biases are magnified, and more work is often created down the line,\u201d Mount Sinai nurse Denash Forbes said. Mount Sinai Health System<\/p>\n<p>But local New York nurses and leaders don\u2019t see it that way, and instead see it as a cost-saving measure that replaces nurses\u2019 expertise with programmed prescriptions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen hospitals try to cut corners like this to save patient care. Mistakes are made, biases are magnified, and more work is often created down the line,\u201d Forbes said.<\/p>\n<p>Hagans admitted that the threats from AI have forced industry leaders to lobby for safety from the growing technology in its latest contract negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AI should not be replacing our nurses. YouTube \/ NYCCouncil<\/p>\n<p>New York City hospitals are the latest facilities that have seen significant inroads with AI in treatment, a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/16\/health\/as-ai-nurses-reshape-hospital-care-human-nurses-are-pushing-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">trend that is impacting hospitals nationwide<\/a>.
