When New York City<\/a> Council member Erik Bottcher<\/a> announced his run to replace longtime Democratic<\/a> U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler<\/a>, he cast the race as bigger than a changing of hands in Manhattan\u2019s 12th Congressional District. He cast it as a test of the country\u2019s democratic character.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re at a fork in the road,\u201d Bottcher, 46, said in an interview with The Advocate. \u201cWe are either going to reject hatred and bigotry and discrimination, or our country will succumb to it, and we\u2019ll roll back our hard-won civil rights and protections.\u201d<\/p>\n

The moment is personal and political<\/a>. It\u2019s also intensely local and unmistakably national.<\/p>\n

The newly open seat is one of the most competitive Manhattan primaries in years, a race that suddenly features multiple contenders, including political newcomers and recognizable names. One of those names is Jack Schlossberg, President John F. Kennedy\u2019s grandson.<\/p>\n

For Bottcher, who was re-elected to the City Council in early November with roughly 90 percent of the vote, the race is a generational inflection point.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are hungry for new leaders who can bring a new level of energy to the fight,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have many great leaders in Washington who\u2019ve been serving for decades and decades, but it\u2019s time for new leaders to join them who can bring more power to the fight.\u201d<\/p>\n

The district, which runs through the west side of Manhattan and includes Chelsea, Hell\u2019s Kitchen, Midtown, and parts of Greenwich Village, mirrors the very communities that shaped him.<\/p>\n

Much of Bottcher\u2019s political identity began in adolescence. At 15, he was hospitalized for a month after multiple suicide attempts. \u201cThat treatment is the reason I\u2019m alive today and the reason I\u2019m a New York City Council member,\u201d he said. But he noted that such care is \u201cout of reach for the vast majority of Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n

His personal history motivates one of his top federal priorities: a national reckoning with the country\u2019s mental health system.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to walk far in New York City to see how badly our government has failed on the issue of mental health,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

When discussing the rollback of Option 3, the LGBTQ+-specific pathway within the 988 suicide hotline<\/a>, he spoke with the urgency of someone who believes the consequences are not theoretical. \u201cBy eliminating Option 3, the Trump administration is basically telling queer kids that they don\u2019t care if they live or die,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mental health is one of three issues Bottcher listed as core to his campaign. The others: stopping what he called \u201cthe Trump agenda,\u201d and confronting the country\u2019s housing shortage.<\/p>\n

Bottcher described the housing shortage as a structural national failure, not just a New York<\/a> story. \u201cEvery corner of the country is being affected by a housing crisis,\u201d he said, arguing that the federal government must incentivize states and cities to reform restrictive zoning codes to generate more homes. \u201cThis will bring down housing costs nationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n

The policy aligns with his r\u00e9sum\u00e9: in the Council, he has participated in land-use actions and affordable housing expansions across Manhattan\u2019s West Side. It is also, he says, the issue most frequently raised by voters.<\/p>\n

Bottcher\u2019s rivals vary in background, political experience, and public visibility. While some contenders enter with recognizable surnames or statewide networks, Bottcher says he’s running on durability.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are folks in this race who are bringing real celebrity,\u201d he said. \u201cBut what\u2019s even more powerful is years and years of working on the ground for our community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside New York, Bottcher sees signals that the political environment is shifting. He referenced Virginia\u2019s recent blue wave and the surprising crossover rhetoric from Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene<\/a>, who has publicly stepped back from the MAGA movement and recently announced her resignation from Congress.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s incredible energy to get our country back on track,\u201d Bottcher said. \u201cI think that is coming from many sides of the political spectrum. People are beginning to realize what\u2019s happening in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

His candidacy, he argues, is positioned to harness that cross-pressure \u2014 the interplay of anti-extremism sentiment, generational change, and the hunger for new leadership in a district that has long been a Democratic anchor.<\/p>\n

Bottcher\u2019s core message is that voters should examine a candidate\u2019s history, not the gloss of their launch video.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want to know what someone\u2019s going to do in office, look at what they\u2019ve done. Look at their track record, look at their history in the community that they\u2019re seeking to represent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI moved to New York with a couple of bags and a few bucks in my pocket,\u201d he said. \u201cI know what the promise of New York is for someone who\u2019s fleeing discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n
