For under a million dollars, one can find all sorts of housing configurations: park- and subway-adjacent studios, one-bedrooms hidden in carriage houses or former shoe factories, and even the occasional true two-bedroom. We\u2019re combing the market for particularly spacious, nicely renovated, or otherwise worth-a-look apartments at various six-digit price points.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This week we have potential on West 111th and a consideration of another life in Middle Village.<\/p>\n
605 West 111th Street, 43<\/a><\/p>\n \n 605 West 111th Street A three-bedroom co-op in Morningside Heights right off of Riverside Park (and basically around the corner from Columbia) with original millwork that\u2019s been stripped down and restored to something lovely and warm. The murals and wallpaper may not be to your taste, but that is why God invented white paint. (You may also want to consider asking the seller to strip the wallpaper while you\u2019re negotiating.) The kitchen is a good size and comes with a Smeg fridge and windowed cabinets, though I prefer to hide my mess, generally. The bathroom could likely use a refresh but has a claw-foot tub. Maintenance is $1,549, and that gets you a live-in super, storage unit, bike storage, and laundry room.<\/p>\n 181 Seventh Avenue, 7B<\/a><\/p>\n \n 181 Seventh Avenue A highish floor, big windows, and a little balcony appeal in this one-bedroom condo in Chelsea. (The western exposure also means great afternoon light.) The kitchen is on the smaller side but comes with updated stainless-steel appliances and a dishwasher. The bedroom is king size and has a large walk-in closet, though you may want to replace the mirrored doors. Common charges are $1,285, which will get you a nice spread of amenities: a 24-hour doorman, laundry, bike room, storage lockers, and, per the listing,\u00a0\u201cexceptional staff and management.\u201d<\/p>\n 150 East 49th Street, 9D<\/a><\/p>\n \n 150 East 49th Street The listing says \u201cpriced to sell,\u201d and I\u2019d have to agree \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s a good amount of space and charm for something under $700,000. There are hardwood floors and tasteful millwork throughout. The bathroom has striking navy tile that I quite like and glass brick in the shower to let in more of that south-facing light. The only room that seems to need real consideration is the kitchen \u2014\u00a0it is a dark little nook off the living room, and the large-format white tile and white cabinets are looking extra institutional with the fluorescent light. The appliances could likely use a refresh, too.
