{"id":58848,"date":"2025-12-02T20:40:22","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T20:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/58848\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T20:40:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T20:40:22","slug":"staten-island-hunger-task-force-elects-new-leadership-awards-microgrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/58848\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island Hunger Task Force elects new leadership, awards microgrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RQWUJOECTBE3FBIA7GJU3DDOZA\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 The Staten Island Hunger Task Force met for the final time in 2025 to elect new leadership, offer community updates, and brainstorm ideas on how to help residents keep their pets even as the financial belt tightens. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GZBNUXM2PJH4PCI4ECBBHONVLI\">Heather Butts, the executive director of H.E.A.L.T.H. For Youths, announced she will be moving on from her position as chair of the task force, but will remain a part of the organization in an emeritus position. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UUTOJQ7U2BA25FHB7VJWBKPVYI\">\u201cI just want to say that being chair of the Staten Island Hunger Task Force has been an actual great joy in my life. I\u2019ve really loved working with everybody on our committee. It\u2019s a real family,\u201d Butts told the attendees. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K6WYKUELVJGMPI55Q5OWUOEJLM\">Elections to the task force are held annually, with members nominating each other and themselves for positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M5GLK46PVVFPFDEI6LCVEN5PTE\">Elected to assume Butts\u2019 station was vice chair Antoinette Donegan; elected to Donegan\u2019s position was Alex Hughes; and elected to secretary was Steven Kaufman. <\/p>\n<p>Microgrants awarded<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZSNCJRE6X5FU3NIQAJEOQJWD74\">Butts announced that the task force will disperse a dozen microgrants to local organizations, which include: <\/p>\n<p>Central Family Life CenterChristchurch New BrightonFirst Central Economic Development CorpHarvest Food PantryJewish Community Center of Staten IslandPolice Officer Gerard Carter FoundationPS 18 Muslim Sisters of Staten IslandThe Rabbinical Alliance of America Staten Island Giving CircleSt. John\u2019s Food Pantry St. Paul\u2019s UMC South Shore Food Pantry <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZHSE776VQNGWBECCVAMKNSTUSA\">The awards will be distributed directly to the pantries listed above, with members visiting each location. <\/p>\n<p>501(c)(3) application<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EVTF4XGOUNAOZMSL5RUGRYW2OM\">The task force is in the process of applying for its 501(c)(3) paperwork. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BDYCITS37JB3PLNBA7LMLONZPE\">A <a href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">501(c)(3) <\/a>is a type of organization that is recognized by the IRS, exempting it from federal taxes. These organizations specifically \u201care charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition, and preventing cruelty to children or animals,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/charities-non-profits\/charitable-organizations\/exempt-purposes-internal-revenue-code-section-501c3#:~:text=The%20exempt%20purposes%20set%20forth,cruelty%20to%20children%20or%20animals.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to the IRS<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7VLHWIBIBJFWRPKIQEJZMTJ2K4\">A law firm is working with the task force to pursue this change. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"45UI5VU7OBGAJOTZ3UL2JHP6MM\">If the task force is approved 501(c)(3), it would give them an opportunity to extend leadership beyond one-year terms. <\/p>\n<p>Pet food<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L72ZOLUREFANHLK3EL4KR3X4D4\">Director of the Mayor\u2019s Office of Animal Welfare Alex Silver visited the meeting to discuss the needs of pantries in terms of pet food. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OLAJHULQ6RHA3NW2JYP4GRQJYU\">\u201cThere\u2019s an overlap with human and animal welfare and wellbeing,\u201d Silver said. \u201cThese are not separate silos, or they shouldn\u2019t be, and there\u2019s so much we can do if we work together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VS7ANFYRYJDTXMWCBRFIXHDFS4\">Silver explained that a large chunk of the animals that come into the Animal Care Centers of New York City \u2014 the city\u2019s adoption and surrender nonprofit \u2014 are surrendered by New Yorkers who cannot afford to pay for pet food. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BKSTIQFKEVESHOTTFATLFVWK2M\">\u201cI think the argument that we want to make is that there\u2019s such a value to the human-animal bond, and it shouldn\u2019t be only the wealthiest among us who can benefit from it,\u201d Silver said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4DUTKZ2JSJBYJJQPHJ5BTG3YBM\">Despite having the space to accommodate large pallets of pet food, many pantries in the task force agreed that it is a funding issue. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H5H3HE276BEZVHMU5WUYDADTOA\">Pet food often comes from donations to Staten Island pantries and generally goes quickly when the pantries are open. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2IFY64I6H5GKVETXKTOLRN32WU\">There is legislation, according to Silver, that would compel \u201cthe Health Department to create a pet food pantry,\u201d though it has yet to be voted on. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 The Staten Island Hunger Task Force met for the final time in 2025 to&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":58849,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[39],"tags":[9,24,63,134,136,135],"class_list":{"0":"post-58848","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-staten-island","8":"tag-new-york","9":"tag-new-york-city","10":"tag-nyc","11":"tag-staten-island","12":"tag-staten-island-headlines","13":"tag-staten-island-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/58848","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=58848"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/58848\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/58849"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=58848"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=58848"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=58848"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
