{"id":59634,"date":"2025-12-03T13:50:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T13:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/59634\/"},"modified":"2025-12-03T13:50:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T13:50:10","slug":"staten-island-hs-boys-hoops-chris-albano-charles-gambino-flex-their-muscles-as-sw-takes-round-1-from-curtis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/59634\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island HS boys\u2019 hoops: Chris Albano, Charles Gambino flex their muscles as SW takes round 1 from Curtis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LHZZAOZCVRHEHO2XCWDIHZAIJE\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 You\u2019ve surely heard of the basketball theory that every big man wants to handle the ball and every guard fantasizes about posting up, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ISXXNSTI2ZEYDKIAQYPXQNPUME\">Well, Susan Wagner point guard Chris Albano bided his time Tuesday while Curtis primarily played a 2-3 halfcourt zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PVYCTXG3DBFZXHMAZRNGDXZLIY\">But when the Warriors tried to produce a spark by switching to man-to-man, the 6-foot-2 Albano\u2019s eyes bulged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EFSSIXBKOFCTFKPT4B4DPRVEG4\">\u201cI had a smaller defender and I wanted to take advantage\u201a\u2019\u2019 explained Albano. \u201dThey had been playing zone the whole game, but the first time they went man, I posted him up and scored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QFJ6QHCH7NBSXIBY6HHFNXP4VU\">\u201cI like playing with my back to the basket a little bit,\u2019&#8217; laughed the three-year varsity player. \u201dAgain, I was just trying to take advantage of the situation.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OODVZPPZRZAY5PTXHGPDSXMWPM\">In many ways, he did all night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WU6JI7MF7VBUVCSLTUTVA24SJU\">Albano scored a game-high 21 points and teammate Charles Gambino turned in a herculean double-double as the Falcons registered a 64-46 PSAL 4A Brooklyn-Staten Island II division victory over the host Warriors in St. George.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HYZFAYT7TBC2NJ477Z35KJEUAM\">Albano turned in an excellent floor game while Gambino recorded 12 points and an 18-rebound performance that spearheaded an eye-popping 45-25 advantage on the backboards against the bigger Warriors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G2UPPHKRIJC6XHDCEG3RGGOKG4\">Adem Djonbalic and sixth man Yusaf Daramy chipped in with nine points apiece as Wagner improved to 4-0 overall, including 1-0 in league play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V6TUXBT3INH53FYOJLEPPVF3KY\">Junior guard Makhiye Washington paced the Warriors (0-3) with 19 points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R7IHUJVYJNE77O2GPQWL54IIZQ\">\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely a big deal to win a game like this,\u2019&#8217; said SW head coach Danny Lanigan. \u201dAnytime you play on the road, especially in our division, it\u2019s a bigger challenge. Last year, we were 0-4 on the road and 4-0 at home in the division, so this is our first win in two seasons on the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2CF4T7D66VD3JP327WCKGVAD24\">\u201cWe knew this was one we wanted to have because we want to start the season strong. We had three decent non-league games to tune us up for this and we felt pretty comfortable where we stood coming in here in terms of the match-up and we know it\u2019s going to be tough in two weeks when they come to our place.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FP4JLAXXLRDEPGA3THFNPMGKRA\">\u201cI thought we played well as a team, but also brought a lot of toughness,\u2019&#8217; added Gambino, who\u2019s a two-year starter for SW. \u201dWe battled, non-stop, offensively and defensively against a bigger team because we really wanted it tonight.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WMXOUHMU6BA5HEY3QDID4M6BJM\">The Falcons, who owned a 15-3 advantage on the backboards in the second quarter, were clinging to a 22-18 lead when they staged a game-changing 11-0 run in a 2:07 span late in the first half.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Finding the open man\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/7T57O4WZB5CLFNJ75ADJHFZDFU.jpg\"  \/>Susan Wagner&#8217;s Charles Gambino, right, makes a pass around Curtis&#8217; Jayden Faulkner during Tuesday&#8217;s PSAL 4A Brooklyn-Staten Island II division encounter in St. George.(Advance\/SILive.com | Charlie De Biase Jr.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TZKRW4CXOBGZZFOS6U3C45YNNQ\">Gambino took center stage during the run, beginning with a put back, then a bucket in transition off a pretty feed from Albano. After Daramy converted another offensive rebound into a basket, Gambino scored off a drive in the lane before Jimmy Eisenhardt capped the run with a right-corner trey with 53 ticks left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WNBBQZZU3NHHPGGJD6KEEV4EJM\">Curtis\u2019 Jayden Faulkner broke the spell with his own put back with 38 seconds left, but when Daramy scored off an Albano pass with four ticks left, the Falcons owned a commanding 35-20 lead at intermission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S2XALFHHBRAI3IVJRWLE4CNOCU\">\u201cSize really doesn\u2019t matter when it comes to rebounds,\u2019&#8217; said Gambino, who had nine caroms in each half. \u201dIt\u2019s your heart and non-stop fighting for the ball \u2014 it doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re 7-foot or 6-foot, like me. It doesn\u2019t matter, if you keep fighting for it, (the rebounds) will come.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L7WEWUSMCFDGFLPYPKJLW7LMZ4\">\u201cI think we\u2019re accustomed to (these situations),\u2019&#8217; added Lanigan. \u201dWe\u2019ve been undersized since we joined this league and the majority of our rotation guys were with us last year. Even some of the guys who were JV players &#8230; playing in that league, you\u2019re playing against huge, huge dudes and if you worry about the tape measure, it\u2019s going to be difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BEASR7TOWVCHTGSKL2WXMIKR3I\">\u201cBut if you just go in there and play with toughness on the boards, you\u2019ll be successful.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7ASMWA37WRFRPBPAMWF7HPBBPI\">The Falcons never took their foot off the gas. They had a 45-28 lead with just over 3:00 to play in the third when they went on a 9-3 Albano-led run to take complete control. Albano, in fact, posted up and scored twice during the spurt, including a three-point play that upped the lead to 54-31 and they never looked back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RQUDXP4ZJBANZKW24QRQOAVC7A\">NOTES: Starters Darin Humes-James (seven points) and Clevi Hoxha played valuable minutes throughout for the Falcons &#8230; In addition to Gambino, Daramy (nine), Djonbalic (five) and Albano (four) contributed on the boards.
