{"id":60574,"date":"2025-12-04T11:01:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T11:01:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/60574\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T11:01:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T11:01:15","slug":"siena-lacrosse-coach-liam-gleason-dead-days-after-accident-at-his-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/60574\/","title":{"rendered":"Siena lacrosse coach Liam Gleason dead days after accident at his home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Siena University men\u2019s lacrosse coach and Long Island native Liam Gleason died Wednesday from injuries sustained in a tragic accident at his home over the weekend, the school announced.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was 41.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gleason coached Siena the past seven seasons, led the program to a MAAC championship in May \u2014 the program\u2019s first conference title in 11 years \u2014 and was a constant presence in the Capital Region\u2019s lacrosse scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA sudden, senseless loss carries a kind of pain that defies understanding,\u201d Siena president Chuck Seifert <a href=\"https:\/\/sienasaints.com\/news\/2025\/12\/3\/general-siena-heartbroken-by-the-loss-of-mens-lacrosse-head-coach-liam-gleason.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said in a statement.<\/a> \u201cIt\u2019s hard to imagine anyone more universally loved and admired than Liam. Our community was blessed by Coach Gleason\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The beloved lacrosse coach fell down the stairs at his home around 4 p.m. on Sunday and sustained a serious head injury, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/sports\/article\/siena-lacrosse-coach-liam-gleason-dies-ualbany-21221107.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the Albany Times Union reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37837123\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GettyImages-2249840719.jpg\" alt=\"Siena head coach Liam Gleason watches his team play against Quinnipiac on Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Colonie, NY. \" class=\"wp-image-37837123\"  \/>Siena head coach Liam Gleason watches his team play against Quinnipiac on Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Colonie, NY.  Albany Times Union via Getty Ima<\/p>\n<p>New York State Police and paramedics responded to the scene, and CPR was administered while Gleason was taken to the hospital by ambulance, according to the outlet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Siena announced it will have a public funeral service on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the UHY Center on its campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 250 people showed up at Albany Medical Center to pay tribute to Gleason, who was an organ donor, for his \u201chonor walk.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Among those in attendance were Seifert, the entire Siena men\u2019s lacrosse team, members of the Siena and University of Albany \u2014 Gleason\u2019s alma mater \u2014 athletic staffs, Albany coach Scott Marr and members of his lacrosse team, the Times Union reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gleason was a native of Shoreham-Wading River and played high school lacrosse on the eastern end of Long Island before two years at Division II Adelphi. He then transferred to play lacrosse at Albany, where he helped the program reach the NCAA quarterfinals in 2007.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He became an assistant men\u2019s lacrosse coach at Siena in 2008, staying through 2010, and then took over the head coaching gig at The College of Saint Rose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37837124\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GettyImages-2249621940.jpg\" alt=\"Siena mens lacrosse coach Liam Gleason during a game against Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Siena College in Colonie, NY.\" class=\"wp-image-37837124\"  \/>Siena mens lacrosse coach Liam Gleason during a game against Mount St. Mary\u2019s on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Siena College in Colonie, NY. Albany Times Union via Getty Ima<\/p>\n<p>Gleason joined the Albany coaching staff as an assistant coach a year later before returning to Siena to take over as head coach in 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a standout student-athlete to a dedicated member of the coaching staff, Liam poured his heart into the Capital Region lacrosse community and left an indelible mark on everyone he met,\u201d the Albany men\u2019s lacrosse team said in a statement. \u201cHis passion, leadership and friendship will be deeply missed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/tom-rotanz-23390028_here-is-a-tribute-to-liam-gleason-a-former-ugcPost-7402010214574501888-h0Hz\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAOjUYwBXF5pJXRnNF3geXbY4ZEAQ--Kdhc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">In a heartfelt tribute<\/a>, Gleason\u2019s high school head coach Tom Rotanz described his former player as a \u201cgentle giant\u201d and a \u201cman whose kindness filled every room he entered.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my 38 years of coaching, only a handful of players ever made me think, the world would be a better place if more people were like him. Liam was one of them,\u201d Rotanz wrote in a social media post. \u201cI am struggling with the reality that I will never see him again \u2014 never share our annual dinners, never exchange our handshake that always turned into one of his chest-bump hugs (which made me feel small), never reminisce about his high school days or talk strategy for the upcoming season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot surprising that Liam is leading today\u2019s \u2018Hero\u2019s Walk.\u2019 That is who he was. Liam is my hero.
