{"id":60788,"date":"2025-12-04T15:42:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T15:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/60788\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T15:42:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T15:42:09","slug":"fbi-makes-arrest-in-jan-6-pipe-bomb-investigation-after-nearly-5-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/60788\/","title":{"rendered":"FBI makes arrest in Jan. 6 pipe bomb investigation after nearly 5 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A suspect has been arrested in connection with the planting of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/02\/04\/us-news\/republicans-grill-fbi-over-troubling-discrepancy-about-jan-6-pipe-bomb-suspect-still-roaming-free\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pipe bombs outside the Democratic and Republican National Committees<\/a> on the eve of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, The Post has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect, 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr. of Woodbridge, Va., was collared Thursday morning and was set to be arraigned in DC federal court at 1 p.m., according to a law enforcement source.<\/p>\n<p>The arrest comes one month before the fifth anniversary of the melee that briefly delayed congressional confirmation of former Vice President Joe Biden\u2019s 2020 election victory \u2014 and closes an <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/02\/us-news\/fbi-has-made-little-meaningful-progress-toward-identifying-jan-6-pipe-bomb-suspect-house-gop-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">embarrassing chapter for the FBI<\/a>, which had been castigated by lawmakers for the lack of progress in identifying a perpetrator.<\/p>\n<p>A suspect has been arrested in connection with the planting of pipe bombs outside the Democratic and Republican National Committees on the eve of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. AP<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/03\/09\/video-shows-suspect-planted-pipe-bombs-ahead-of-capitol-riot\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Surveillance footage showed<\/a> a person carrying a backpack and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, mask, gloves, glasses, and a pair of Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers who planted what investigators called \u201cviable explosive devices\u201d at the headquarters of the two major parties <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/01\/06\/multiple-explosive-devices-found-amid-washington-dc-protests\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on the night of Jan. 5, 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The devices were discovered the following afternoon \u2014 approximately 17 hours later and at around the same time Congress convened to count the 2020 electoral votes, a session which was suspended for several hours after supporters of President Trump broke into the Capitol and stormed the House and Senate chambers.<\/p>\n<p>Then-Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) both came \u201cwithin feet\u201d of the devices as they traveled to and from the DNC headquarters on South Capitol Street on Jan. 6.<\/p>\n<p>In Pelosi\u2019s case, her motorcade drove past one of the bombs after it was discovered by law enforcement, according to a congressional report that blamed law enforcement for failing to adequately secure the perimeter.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect can be seen planting one of the bombs. AP<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/02\/us-news\/fbi-has-made-little-meaningful-progress-toward-identifying-jan-6-pipe-bomb-suspect-house-gop-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report, released in January of this year <\/a>by Reps. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), assessed that \u201clittle meaningful progress\u201d had been made in the pipe bomb investigation and charged that the feds had \u201crefused to provide substantive updates to Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite \u201ca promising array of data and \u2026 numerous persons of interest,\u201d the lawmakers\u2019 report said, \u201c[b]y the end of February 2021, the FBI began diverting resources away from the pipe bomb investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same day the report was issued, investigators released additional information about the suspect \u2014 including video of the person planting one of the bombs and an estimate that the perp stood 5 feet 7 inches tall.<\/p>\n<p>Video shows the 2021 D.C. pipe bombing suspect.
