\n\tCulture might be more easily seen than defined, a point driven home by the crowd at New York<\/a> magazine<\/a>\u2018s party celebrating its Culturati 50 list on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

Editor in chief David Haskell was joined by host committee and cover stars including Parker Posey<\/a>, Claire Danes, and Rachel Zegler. Greeted by a photographer upon her arrival at Manuela<\/a> in SoHo, Posey gamely fanned her skirt and posed in front of a printed curtain, explaining, \u201cIt\u2019s all about the billowing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTrue to the reason for the play-it-forward celebration, Posey\u2019s instinct was to take a closer look at the finished product. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Vox Media-owned outlet highlighted 50 actors, performers, artists, and creatives who shaped entertainment and culture this year.\u00a0\u201cSeverance\u201d lead Adam Scott, \u201cThe Gilded Age\u2019s\u201d\u00a0Ben Trotter, \u201cOvercompensating\u2019s\u201d Benito Skinner, \u201cLiberation\u201d\u00a0playwright Bess Wohl, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, \u201cLonely Crowds\u201d author Stephanie Wambugu, musician The Dare, and \u201cSomebody Somewhere\u2019s\u201d Jeff Hiller were among the guests on hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHaskell hopes the Culterati list will become an annual expression of New York<\/a> magazine<\/a>\u2019s version of culture. \u201cYou could obviously just build it up with just musicians or movie stars. For us, it was really important to cross all the disciplines that we consider to be interesting [to] culture,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd to find people who had really great years. It\u2019s not that they\u2019re just incredible directors or performers, but that this year they did something interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNoting how so much cultural material that debuted this year was not developed anticipating a second term for President Trump, Haskell added that context has lent new relevance to projects such as Broadway play \u201cLiberation,\u201d which deals with abortion rights.<\/p>\n

Asked about the cultural moment that New York magazine\u2019s former Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi is having [with her tell-all \u201cAmerican Canto\u201d that details her sexting affair with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.], Haskell said, \u201cIt\u2019s a sad situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several guests spoke of the political overshadows on culture. Writer and comedian Julio Torres said that people need to realize \u201chow symbiotic culture and politics are, how one informs the other and how impossible it is to isolate one from the other. It\u2019s interesting to see the tension\u00a0between politics and resistance to the culture. Every time I talk about this, I sound like a beauty queen, saying, \u2018I want world peace.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

After Danes swung by to introduce herself as \u201ca major fan,\u201d the \u201cColor Theories\u201d show creator and \u201cProblemista\u201d filmmaker continued, \u201cDuring the first Trump wave, there was this idea that the arts will save us. Now as artists, we find ourselves wrestling with the idea that we can\u2019t isolate our politics from our art<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNow developing \u201cColor Theories\u201d for HBO<\/a>, Torres has also been commissioned with his friend\u00a0Martine Gutierrez\u00a0for the 2026 Whitney Biennial, and the pair are considering \u201csomething underwater.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Asked what\u2019s driving culture, Skinner said, \u201cI think it\u2019s a fear of fascism. We\u2019re doing more art<\/a> because we\u2019re terrified and we need outlets for that. People want it more than ever. That may be a beautiful result of a terrible time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Skinner is working on the second season of \u201cOvercompensating\u201d for Amazon<\/a> Prime, and said that viewers are in for Spring Break and a Valentine\u2019s Day episode \u201cthat is kind of nasty.\u201d \u201cIt feels really raw. We\u2019re raising all the stakes in the show, but still maintaining this nostalgic world that is grounded in college,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the emotions are higher \u2014 more sex, more drugs, hopefully, more laughs. We\u2019re going for it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Posey said the New York magazine assignment attuned her antenna to culture and heightened her appreciation for it. \u201cWe see cultural things and we\u2019re moved by them,\u201d said Posey. \u201cBut not always are we asked to carry it within the year to express it in a journalistic piece.\u201d<\/p>\n

Being part of the cultural moment that the hit HBO<\/a> show created didn\u2019t really change her perspective. \u201cThat\u2019s the kind of thing that when it happens to you, you kind of disassociate from it,\u201d she said. \u201cTo be on the inside of entertainment [as a Culturati] was so much fun. That\u2019s the baseline of what I do. Having people imitate me in a backyard, that was joy. Joy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ready for the Dec. 17 premiere of Season Two of \u201cFallout,\u201d actress Frances Turner echoed that sentiment. \u201cWe\u2019re in a moment where cultural moments are more important to hold onto and really savor. Dive into culture and wrap yourself in culture to get more disconnected. Sometimes it feels like these things that connect us are these cultural moments,\u201d she said, naming the\u00a0Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art as favorite escapes in the city.<\/p>\n

Two influencers and relative newcomers to the city, Sophie Silva and Kalita Hon \u2014 who are not among this year\u2019s Cultarati 50 \u2014 suggested the interplay at the party best exemplified New York\u2019s culture. \u201cInteractions in passing are everything,\u201d Silva said. \u201cI\u2019m from L.A., technically. If you\u2019re in your car all the time and do self-checkout at the grocery store, you don\u2019t want to interact with anyone. Something about New York generates those conversations that can drive culture.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
