Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk<\/a> has some thoughts on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a> and the type of people who voted for him. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, it\u2019s so interesting, because I lived in Manhattan for a while, and I loved this city,\u201d Kirk told<\/a> The New York Times\u2019 Andrew Ross Sorkin at the Dealbook Summit on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Sorkin had pointed out that Mamdani, a democratic socialist and the city\u2019s first Muslim mayor, was someone who had \u201ccaptured younger voters\u201d but was on the \u201ccomplete opposite end\u201d of where Kirk\u2019s late husband, right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, would have stood politically. He then asked Kirk for her take on the new mayor.<\/p>\n

Kirk answered that she wanted to approach the question \u201cas a female voter,\u201d due to the large number of women who voted for Mamdani. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s a tendency, especially when you live in a city like Manhattan, where, again, you are so career-driven, and you almost look to the government as a form of replacement for certain things, relationship-wise, even,\u201d she said. \u201cYou see things a little bit differently.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I don\u2019t want to have happen is women, young women, in the city look to the government as a solution,\u201d she said. \u201cTo put off having a family or a marriage, because you\u2019re relying on the government to support you, instead of being united with a husband, where you can support yourself and your husband can support [you], and you guys can all combine together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kirk then added that she found \u201cit so ironic and so interesting that a heavy percentage of the individuals that voted for him were female.\u201d <\/p>\n

Many online commenters, including some high-profile career women, found fault with Kirk\u2019s take and shared their thoughts on the Times\u2019 Instagram post: <\/p>\n

\u201cSorry what? The government supports single working women in Manhattan?!!\u201d wrote Elaine Welteroth, former editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue. \u201cLET US KNOW WHEN THAT BILL GETS PASSED SIS \ud83d\ude02.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWait, what?????? journalist Katie Couric responded.<\/p>\n

Another commenter took a more humorous turn. <\/p>\n

\u201cYes whenever I\u2019m cold at night I turn to the good ole nyc government for what I\u2019m not getting from a partner,\u201d they wrote. \u201cWhenever I need love nyc.gov is always there. My pookie \ud83e\ude77.\u201d <\/p>\n

A different person pointed out the irony of Kirk\u2019s take, given that she has succeeded her husband as the CEO of Turning Point USA.<\/p>\n

\u201cSoooo a female CEO is worried other women become CEOs and should become mothers?\u201d they pointed out. <\/p>\n
