{"id":61896,"date":"2025-12-05T15:54:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T15:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/61896\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T15:54:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T15:54:08","slug":"staten-island-hs-boys-hoops-5-games-msit-coach-charlie-donohue-joins-exclusive-club-with-win-sw-trips-lincoln","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/61896\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island HS boys\u2019 hoops (5 games); MSIT coach Charlie Donohue joins exclusive club with win; SW trips Lincoln"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DV37PJHXVNFC5FNUSIXWPYYLZY\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Welcome to the club, Charlie Donohue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YBZ4A5N5PFAELNV3JCUHJYI2D4\">McKee\/Staten Island Tech\u2019s boys\u2019 varsity basketball mentor became only the fifth coach from the Island to eclipse the 300-win mark after his Seagulls recorded a 78-38 PSAL 3A division victory over visiting Eagle Academy Staten Island on Thursday in New Dorp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GZZTI6IXY5HILMGZ3QGQKEXFMA\">Donohue, who\u2019s in his 19th varsity season at MSIT (21st overall), joins an impressive list of Island coaches that surpassed 300 wins, including Tony Rafaniello (511; Monsignor Farrell, New Dorp, Moore Catholic), Joe Coscia (445; Susan Wagner), Charlie Driscoll (344; St. Peter\u2019s) and Jack McGinley (337; St. Peter\u2019s, St. Joseph by-the-Sea).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZKUOXPVWIFF6TMYRB3P6XFTNEI\">\u201cIt\u2019s just amazing to know I\u2019m in the conversation with those four coaches,\u2019&#8217; said Donohue. \u201dI played for and coached against Charlie (Driscoll); I coached against both Raf and Coscia and, of course, you\u2019ve heard Jack McGinley\u2019s name forever and I\u2019m very proud to even be mentioned with those guys.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RGHCRHECNNDGFFX5AH4UKZOD2U\">Donohue appreciates all the players who took this rare journey with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6LLGYGVKRZH7DHHPRIHC3VKX2Y\">\u201cIt took a lot of years to get to this point and I owe it to the kids who bought in. They\u2019re the ones who deserve the credit \u2014 not the coach,\u2019&#8217; said a humbled Donohue, who was joined by several former players Thursday, including Atigi Moore, who played on his first team. \u201cSome of those former players have become my best friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S7L4LVFP7VFHFBPU6O3SQWDIG4\">\u201c(MSIT basketball) is a special family to me\u201a\u2019\u2019 he added. \u201dI\u2019m so proud to be a part of it.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XTIE273ATRCFVK4L4QNLEUFILI\">Donohue admitted he never thought he\u2019d be in this position when he took over the Seagulls\u2019 program prior to the 2007-08 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DYIF7TPOBFCLBEB4J2FBZA3JAI\">\u201cI think back to my first day (as varsity coach) and I remember thinking that I wanted to bring a struggling program back to the success it had once experienced,\u2019&#8217; said Donohue. \u201dYou think back to those teams that Mickey Burns coached \u2014 I wanted to experience the same success as those teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BBQ2EPR2BRAHVPLFH5AM2OWGW4\">\u201cI didn\u2019t think I\u2019d be here,\u2019&#8217; he added, referring to notching 300 wins. \u201dI am definitely blessed.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Presented with a cake\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/FMHWZZWLBNFDJJIJL67YOLMRXE.jpeg\"  \/>McKee\/Staten Island Tech boys&#8217; varsity head coach Charlie Donohue, standing center, is joined by former player Atigi Moore and their children following the Seagulls&#8217; PSAL 3A victory over Eagle Academy Staten Island. Nizayah Jordan, Dalton Cherubin and Javen Marque added nine points apiece for MSIT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3JKLQ6LJPNG4PI2W5SXIUXDEMY\">Armani Perez and Juneek Daniels scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Eagle (2-3, 1-1).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E4R6KIKQ6BGITJTTD2B4WJAWBE\">Jordan scored eight points, Cherubin added six and both Jayden Lin and Legrand hit threes as MSIT raced to a 24-7 lead after one period and never looked back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HENVMYX26NCJZIUKA6MSLALI2I\">Susan Wagner 61, Abraham Lincoln 48<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WCWCSZNJT5HGNCJQZLROXFPUKY\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Senior guard Chris Albano scored a team-high 18 points and the Falcons tightened the clamps defensively in the fourth quarter to register the PSAL 4A Brooklyn-Staten Island II division victory over the visiting Railsplitters in Sea View.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N6VRN2L4SJHN5HU7IFEGX6J7F4\">In addition to Albano, the undefeated Falcons (5-0) received another double-double from senior Charles Gambino (12 points, 14 rebounds) while Adem Djonbalic (two treys) and Darin Humes-James added 13 and eight points, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZQDINBQ65BBBZP7SB2C44YV2YA\">Jace Parris tallied a game-high 20 points and Dean Diaz added 10 for Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QG2PZPJZABFT5KBSXTUPVJ6B3E\">\u201cA solid win when we didn\u2019t have our best night,\u2019&#8217; said SW head coach Danny Lanigan. \u201dWe battled through some poor shooting for us and hot shooting early (from Lincoln).\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TZPHENFZIRH2HM325OQCKC2KU4\">Lanigan said that in addition to Gambino\u2019s 14 caroms, he also kept another 12 rebounds up for grabs for teammates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"W5KDM72TMJB23KUFEUWL2DJS44\">\u201cHe was once again an animal on the boards,\u2019&#8217; praised the coach of his 6-foot-2 forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EP5RG7DV4FCCRLZUQEUTQCPRPY\">With a 16-14 lead after one period, the Falcons got a bit of separation at the half thanks in part to Albano (five points), freshman Brayden Louisson (four points) and Djonbalic (three free throws). <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3KNPSTI3V5HTVLZA7NMM4ZFT6U\">Wagner maintained its six-point advantage (46-40) heading into the final period when it held the Railsplitters to just eight points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7SONVKHNVZCFPERG772M54NBLY\">Albano scored five more points, Gambino added four and the Falcons drained 5 of 6 free-throw attempts (Albano 3 for 4) to pull away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MUFAPB6GARDGDNO7KELMTZ2NUM\">\u201c(Albano) battled through an off night and stayed the course,\u2019&#8217; Lanigan said. \u201d(Djonbalic) found his stroke, which was very helpful, and Clevi Hoxha turned in another all-around floor performance despite a shooting slump.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4PJHR75DUBDW5G36SF4P7C6HFY\">SW was 14 for 18 from the charity stripe overall thanks, in part, to a 7-for-7 performance from Djonbalic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5YXOB4ZLWBFLNJAJOU6BXZXIOA\">CSIM 42, Petrides 31<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3C73FMFX7FCLBFQR3ZU25PWTYI\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Xavier Farley nearly posted a triple-double and the Dragons got a boost from a big third quarter as they registered the PSAL 3A victory over the host Panthers in Sunnyside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OVTV6H7XRZCN7NAR6GJEPH2QJQ\">Farley finished tied for the team lead in points with Patrick Tucker (10) and also added 12 rebounds and eight blocks for 3-2 CSIM (2-1 PSAL). Stanley Kushnir and Daniel Zajonc teamed for another 15 points while Danny O\u2019Connor dished out five assists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ASNWQBKLOZHUNIHZOYBKSDU2Q4\">Aiden Gonzalez had a game-high 11 points and Jaiden Brown tallied eight for the Panthers (0-3).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VKIKT3YFUNH6BGLIHJ2WKDNA3Y\">\u201cA great defensive effort tonight,\u2019&#8217; praised CSIM head coach Danny Lee, whose team held the hosts to six fourth-quarter points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NPSZXINDKJHDVJMCOMKB3QS7HM\">Farley and Kushnir teamed for nine first-half points to help give the Dragons an 18-15 lead at intermission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B5F6M3ULSFHMJFKWBMIKZUWVDM\">Tucker scored six and CSIM connected on 8 of 13 freebies in the third (Zajonc 4 for 4) as the visitors carried a 35-25 advantage into the final eight minutes and never looked back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H4UNNQZP7JCILPKFYSBHJZBACI\">Junior varsity<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CHQSK2Z2VVGHVLFRF25DOTAHF4\">Tottenville 65, New Dorp 55<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UZQSV7E47VALNPRNIZGA35E3DM\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Blair Tadros paced a balanced attack with 19 points and the Pirates raced to a double-digit halftime lead before cruising to the PSAL 1A division victory over the host Centrals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MVBXUMNWVZER3CD3G6WCCUQM44\">In addition to Tadros (5 of 7 from the free-throw line), Lucas Souleidis (15 points, four treys), Gaser Youssef (13 points) and Adam Musleh (12 points, three treys) also contributed offensively for Tottenville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WFMAXNXMFFFZFE4SPFOX3ILAKY\">Mohammed Mustafa finished with 17 points while Jayden Crawford and Adem Pocesta tallied 11 apiece for the Centrals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"66NGI7EX6BERNIUZO6MRX3YM5U\">The Pirates held a 16-8 lead after one period when they exploded for 27 second-quarter points.
