{"id":62251,"date":"2025-12-05T21:56:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T21:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/62251\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T21:56:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T21:56:08","slug":"nearly-half-of-students-across-ny-state-fail-to-make-the-grade-on-math-english-tests-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/62251\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly half of students across NY state fail to make the grade on math, English tests: data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly half of young New Yorkers statewide are still missing the mark <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/16\/us-news\/nys-lowered-the-bar-for-some-students-to-pass-2025-reading-math-exams\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on standardized math and English exams<\/a>, according to newly released data.<\/p>\n<p>The state Education Department released its yearly report card for public school students in grades 3-8, which showed that only 53% were deemed \u201cproficient\u201d in English Language Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Just a little over half, 57%, made the grade in math for the 2024-25 school year, according to the state data made public Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Education Dept.\u2019s budget was around $40 billion, around the same as the New York City Department of Education\u2019s $42.8 billion, with spending per pupil <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/17\/opinion\/new-york-spending-36293-per-public-school-student-as-special-interests-rub-the-public\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">estimated at a whopping $36,293<\/a> \u2014 even as New York students continue to underperform.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37853705\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/students-hand-holding-pencil-writing-112670465.jpg\" alt=\"A student fills in a bubble on a multiple-choice exam answer sheet with a pencil.\" class=\"wp-image-37853705\"  \/>NYS students are increasing their test scores but still falling short of national averages, a report found.  Achira22 \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Still, the department touted that the scores for grades 3-8 on the ELA and math tests had improved by 5 percentage points each compared to the previous schoolyear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s results reflect the challenges and progress in our schools, and they reaffirm the importance of the work underway through NY Inspires,\u201d said Chancellor Lester W. Young Jr., in a statement accompanying the report card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur commitment remains steadfast: every student in New York deserves access to rigorous instruction, high-quality learning materials, and exceptional educators,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When it came to the National Assessment of Education Progress \u2014 a countrywide exam widely known as \u201cthe nation\u2019s report card\u201d \u2014 only 22% of 4th graders and 26% of 8th graders reached proficiency in reading in the Empire State.<\/p>\n<p>Just 29% of 4th graders and 18% of 8th graders were considered proficient in math on the NAEP.<\/p>\n<p>The results were relatively flat compared to the most <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/28\/opinion\/face-the-facts-about-nycs-plummeting-public-school-enrollment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent dataset from 2022.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The state science exam, which is only given to students in grades 5 and 8, saw the most impressive gains, with 51% of pupils scoring proficient, up from 35% the previous school year, the report showed.<\/p>\n<p>In the city, the numbers were slightly more promising \u2013 with 56.3% of 3rd through 8th graders deemed \u201cproficient\u201d in ELA and 56.9% in math in 2024-25, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/11\/us-news\/nyc-students-make-gains-in-standardized-tests-but-40-still-failed-reading-and-math\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to data released in August<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One area the Big Apple lagged behind the state in was science \u2013 with grades 5 and 8 coming in at just 48% proficient, up from 41% the year before.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37853708\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/test-score-sheet-answers-grade-114318771.jpg\" alt=\"Test score sheet with an A+ grade circled in red and a pencil.\" class=\"wp-image-37853708\"  \/>Charter schools outperform their district counterparts by margins over 10 points.
