STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis paid an unannounced visit to Staten Island Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The Republican governor and former presidential candidate was welcomed at Joyce\u2019s Tavern in Eltingville.<\/p>\n

According to a post on the tavern\u2019s Facebook page<\/a>, DeSantis met with Borough President Vito Fossella and patrons.<\/p>\n

A video posted to social media<\/a> shows DeSantis speaking at the tavern.<\/p>\n

People in Florida say Staten Island is kind of like a borough of Florida because the politics are so similar, DeSantis told the crowd. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd people will say sometimes to me, \u2018oh, can you come to New York and save New York?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I always remind them \u2018I couldn\u2019t get elected in New York with the voters you have.\u2019 <\/p>\n

\u201cBut if it was just NYPD and Fire, I could get elected if it was that,\u201d DeSantis said to applause.<\/p>\n

The purpose of the governor\u2019s visit was not disclosed<\/p>\n

This is not the first time DeSantis has visited the borough<\/a>. In 2023, the governor spoke at an Annadale law enforcement event hosted by the New York State Fraternal Order of Police, about the need for safer communities. That event came ahead of DeSantis announcing his candidacy for president.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this Florida north or is Florida Staten Island south?\u201d the governor jokingly asked the crowd at the time. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to look far in Florida to find someone that\u2019s got Staten Island roots.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Florida Gov.
