Outside of Long Island, Sprouts will open a store in Westchester County, in Hartsdale, later in 2026.

Establishing a New York State presence is part of the fast-growing grocer’s plan to enter new markets in the Northeast and Midwest.

“The greater metropolitan New York City area to include Long Island reveals a large population of health enthusiasts who we believe are seeking our unique better-for-you offerings,” Dan Croce, senior vice president of real estate at Sprouts, said in an email. “We see an exciting opportunity to expand here in Long Island and bring fresh, natural, organic food to a wider market, and this is a great area to support those initiatives.”

Sprouts’ store in Centereach will occupy about 24,000 square feet of an approximately 43,000-square-foot former L.A. Sprouts plans to open more stores next year than it has in 2025, Chief Financial Officer Curtis Valentine told analysts during a third-quarter earnings call Oct. 29.

Sprouts is a specialty retailer with stores that are smaller than traditional supermarkets.

A newly constructed Sprouts is typically about 23,000 square feet, while an existing building converted to a Sprouts store usually ranges from 20,000 to 30,000 square feet, Croce said.

The average supermarket in the United States was 42,453 square feet last year, according to the Food Marketing Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based trade group that represents food retailers and producers.

Sprouts’ target demographic is higher-income shoppers who are “less susceptible to economic downturn,” according to investors’ information on the grocer’s website. But while the grocer’s third-quarter earning results were solid, its gross revenue was lower than expected because of a “softening consumer backdrop,” Valentine told analysts.

Sprouts’ net sales in the third quarter, which ended Sept. 28, were $2.2 billion, a 13% increase from $1.9 billion in the same period last year. The growth was driven by 5.9% increase in sales at stores open at least one year.

“As we look ahead for the remainder of this year, we are balancing the strength of our business strategy against the consumer uncertainty and challenging year-over-year” comparisons of sales at stores open at least one year, Valentine said.

<img alt="Tory N.
