{"id":62821,"date":"2025-12-06T20:44:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T20:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/62821\/"},"modified":"2025-12-06T20:44:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T20:44:07","slug":"staten-island-bowling-jim-elliotts-new-year-singles-classic-turns-50-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/62821\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island bowling: Jim Elliott\u2019s New Year Singles Classic turns 50 in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Z7ZVJ2BTRJD4VDB5J534ISDK6A\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. &#8212; Don\u2019t look now, but Jim Elliott\u2019s New Year Singles Classic turns 50 this year!<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SJGVPYYTJJAWBANEZKL3E5SHXI\">Can\u2019t be right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VSBZTUDFYZDZBC52NU73CVNRDY\">No, it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4H4UD4WETZBAPFXFZ3EKQVJOIM\">The 50th rolling of the annual event will commence Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, with two qualifying squads slated for 1 and 2:30 p.m. at Rab\u2019s Country Lanes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GKIOEFBVO5GFTGQAAAA3BBYVNQ\">\u201cI wish to thank you for participating in the past Classics and making it successful for 50 years,\u201d wrote Elliott in his annual letter to perspective bowlers. \u201cI hope this year\u2019s event will be both enjoyable and profitable for you.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4KN3MSR3HNCXHDVEVWXES2A3AI\">Qualiying continues Jan. 4, Jan. 10 and Jan. 11, also at 1 and 2:30 p.m. each day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"55OBTDDUVNH77CXOIMGNMXZITM\">The Top-24 finals in the borough\u2019s longest running open bowling event will be contested Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CY5VCHURBRH3TCCHO4LV6BMYDE\">\u201cTo insure equal opportunity the top two scores from each squad will be guaranteed in the finals, producing eight finalists each weekend for a total of 16 after the four qualifiers,\u201d said Elliott. \u201cThe next eight highest scores will make up the balance of the finalists. The top eight overall qualifying scores will again be given a bye in the first round. You can be 24 in qualifying and still win the tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CDKG73DPJFD7BOSPNH7OUPWJMQ\">As always, tournament director Jim Elliott reports that the event\u2019s popular opening qualifier &#8212; where paid entrants get a second entry for free &#8212; is nearly sold out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZUFGGQBYVVDLPARMXJASNUW7ZY\">The entry fee is $60. The format consists of bowling three games across six lanes. Handicap is 70 percent of a 220 average. The finals are scratch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NEWXDY63QNEMTAXTBBBZI33HLU\">The top two high rollers from each qualifier (16) will be seeded into the finals as well as the next eight high series for a total of 24 finalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XRHTEFPFIJGIVO7JZIFLCCFA7M\">Staten Island\u2019s Jeff Scire is the defending champion, winning his second straight crown after trying for decades to win his first after accomplishing everything else there is to do in the sport. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LSUG4KU2WZEYDDQSHUDCOLZW44\">***<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RNL4NUNBMVEKBBOZK436T3PZKA\">EXTRA FRAME: Reservations must be fully paid in advance for the first squad.
