STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Another church on Staten Island is being recognized by state officials for its historical and architectural significance. <\/p>\n
Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday announced 19 nominations for the State and National Registers of Historic Places, including the Unitarian Universalist Church of Staten Island<\/a> in New Brighton. <\/p>\n Designed by Brooklyn-based architect Frank Haviland Quinby, a Quaker and social reformer, the building \u201cincorporates Tudor Revival, Queen Anne, and Shingle style references in an eclectic mix,\u201d according to a press release<\/a> sent out Thursday by officials. <\/p>\n The building, located at 312 Fillmore Street, also reflects \u201cArts and Crafts design principles,\u201d which emphasize warmth, natural materials and a residential feel \u2014 values that align with Unitarian beliefs about community and social reform. <\/p>\n The nominations were reviewed by members of the New York State Board for Historic Preservation at a Dec. 3 meeting. Other locations on the list include an office building in Buffalo with a pioneering design in energy efficiency, and a new historic district in Essex County. <\/p>\n \u201cThe history of the people of New York is imprinted in the architecture and places around us,\u201d stated Hochul. \u201cBy recognizing these landmarks and the people behind them, we are strengthening our communities, boosting local pride and ensuring that history remains a living part of New York\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n The church on Staten Island is the third to be nominated in recent months for historical recognition. <\/p>\n
