{"id":62899,"date":"2025-12-06T22:35:21","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T22:35:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/62899\/"},"modified":"2025-12-06T22:35:21","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T22:35:21","slug":"nycs-annual-hiv-report-shows-uptick-in-diagnoses-amid-funding-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/62899\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC\u2019s annual HIV report shows uptick in diagnoses amid funding concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"REPV4TLYJFDBVG264WSGQYBK3Y\">The city\u2019s latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/doh\/downloads\/pdf\/dires\/hiv-surveillance-annualreport-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/doh\/downloads\/pdf\/dires\/hiv-surveillance-annualreport-2024.pdf\">HIV Surveillance Annual Report <\/a>cites an increase in the number of residents diagnosed with the disease, while health officials voice concerns over looming federal budget cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WY4WSGU5LNH3RM7637NKF4XLZE\">Across New York City, 1,791 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in 2024, representing a 5.4% increase from 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7V4VDWSJDZH7DES4ZLG2CUW7YM\">On Staten Island, there were 39 new diagnoses of HIV reported in 2024, with 2,608 borough residents living with HIV and 44 HIV-related deaths, the data shows. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KQQ55ECMQJGYNL2HBZES7LZFM4\">The report showed stark racial and ethnic disparities in new HIV diagnoses \u201cdue to structural racism, poverty, the legacy of housing segregation, unfair access to health care, and other systemic factors,\u201d according to a press release issued by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2P4FQSDVAJBR7EAXYHUCKD7JTU\">Roughly 86% of people newly diagnosed with HIV in 2024 were Black or Latino\/Latina, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4JUV5TND65EV3AFWX6WJ3ESWN4\">The data comes as federal funding cuts loom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DE2MLEXHG5A3VKDERXOSLFYWZE\">The federal government has proposed shuttering the entire Division of HIV Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and fully eliminating $755 million in CDC funding for HIV prevention, according to reports. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LLANAPT7WFBZ3IRMG7TXVLFPBI\">If enacted, the city\u2019s health department would lose over $41 million in funding, which city officials say is used to identify people newly diagnosed with HIV, connect them to treatment and offer partner services. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C6HQUYVFWZBHXPQJWDOHLMZEDQ\">Over the past quarter century, numbers across the five boroughs have improved drastically, data shows. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DQG23ATNQZFWBOZOFABNF3H47U\">Since 2001, new diagnoses across New York City are down more than 70%, data shows.
