{"id":6322,"date":"2025-10-17T12:13:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T12:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/6322\/"},"modified":"2025-10-17T12:13:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T12:13:06","slug":"ny-schools-sue-us-officials-over-47m-grant-cuts-tied-to-transgender-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/6322\/","title":{"rendered":"NY schools sue US officials over $47M grant cuts tied to transgender policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3YXKXLD7DJBM3FGJTL63XP7EJU\">New York City schools sued federal education officials Thursday over a decision to discontinue $47 million in promised grants because of the schools\u2019 guidelines supporting transgender students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CKHW4XC6NFHWPGC5JZFVP3NYRE\">City officials said the federal agency led by Education Secretary Linda McMahon cut funding without the required notice or hearing after deciding that policies letting transgender students play sports and use bathrooms matching their gender identity violate <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/what-is-title-ix-e02d90d300218ebcbb9dd0344053e05c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Title IX<\/a>, which forbids discrimination based on sex in education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UDJS2CPHB5AAFFP4H2S75EF44I\">The Education Department, in a September letter, set a deadline for New York City Public Schools to change the policies or lose current and future funding for 19 specialty magnet schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"F3GUXJMBBBH3LJORZ3V3PF4CHY\">The existing policies mean \u201cmale students who identify as female or transgender are given unqualified access to female intimate spaces,\u201d Craig Trainor, the acting assistant secretary for civil rights, said in a letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DP7SSEQXJFEK5NUZ65DHSU7ZVQ\">New York City was among <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/transgender-school-bathrooms-magnet-school-grants-06d63798411285a373d03793383199bf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">several school districts,<\/a> including Chicago and Fairfax County in Virginia, to receive such letters. New York City filed its lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZSDG2QGWINCKJJXZGNQ7BTVJ4M\">School officials maintain that New York City is fully compliant with Title IX and that the federal department\u2019s \u201cnovel interpretation\u201d conflicts with state and city laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IZNQUGLCZZGEZKTLG6LLPZSE3I\">\u201cU.S. DOE\u2019s threat to cut off tens of millions of dollars in magnet funding unless we cancelled our protections for transgender and gender expansive students is contrary to federal, state, and local law and, just as importantly, our values as New York City Public Schools,\u201d Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QP5MU7ABK5HFJFJQ6LPD3JCUPA\">The 48-page lawsuit asks that the decision to pull the grants be reversed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PG7QBXIF7NEG5HFFEF2QXSVC6Q\">\u201cThe Department sees no merit in this lawsuit,\u201d an Education Department spokesperson responded via email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PKZ3RIEOZNGUHEV76WRQK4QBDY\">The magnet school grant program, the statement said, \u201crequires certification of civil rights compliance, which we could obviously not do in the face of NYC\u2019s continued determination to violate the rights of female students under Title IX.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L5SJJRFF35FXXF5GVG7X7EERV4\">In a related development, New York State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa this week ordered a school district in the suburbs of New York City to temporarily halt enforcement of its new bathroom restrictions for transgender students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Z2DPMQMSBZBGRC7MSJQ34DL3IU\">The New York Civil Liberties Union is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyclu.org\/press-release\/nyclu-challenges-massapequa-school-district-anti-trans-facilities-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">challenging a policy<\/a> the Massapequa School District <a href=\"https:\/\/massapequaschoolny.iqm2.com\/Citizens\/FileOpen.aspx?Type=14&amp;ID=1471&amp;Inline=True\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">imposed last month<\/a> barring transgender students from using bathrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender identities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PUB6BIISFZGKVASDKICUELPLCY\">The Long Island school district <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msd.k12.ny.us\/live-feed#10281238\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said in light of Tuesday\u2019s order<\/a> that it will continue to offer a gender-neutral locker room and bathroom option to \u201cany student who will be more comfortable using such a space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
