Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani offered advice to illegal immigrants on how to evade ICE in a video message Sunday \u2014 calling on illegal immigrants to \u201cstand up\u201d to the federal agents and \u201cknow your rights.\u201d<\/p>\n
The democratic socialist positioned himself as the mayor of \u201cmore than 3 million immigrants\u201d as he spoke following last weekend\u2019s ICE raid in Chinatown, which was disrupted by protesters.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast weekend, ICE attempted to raid Canal Street and detain our immigrant neighbors,\u201d Mamdani said in a\u00a0video posted on X<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday. \u201cAs mayor, I\u2019ll protect the rights of every single New Yorker. And that includes the more than 3 million immigrants who call this city their home.<\/p>\n Zohran Mamdani has made a video advising New Yorkers on how to evade ICE. X\/@ZohranKMamdani<\/p>\n \u201cBut we can all stand up to ICE if you know your rights,\u201d the Queens congressman added, standing in front of a flip chart with the words \u201cKnow your rights\u201d scrawled on it.<\/p>\n \u201cICE cannot enter into private spaces like your home, school, or private area of your workplace without a judicial warrant signed by a judge,\u201d Mamdani said, bringing up an example of such a warrant on the screen.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have the right to say, \u2018I do not consent to entry,\u2019 and the right to keep your door closed,\u201d he added, before showing an example of the non-binding legal paperwork he said ICE may show instead of a judicial warrant.<\/p>\n \u201cICE is legally allowed to lie to you. But you have the right to remain silent. If you are being detained, you may always ask, \u2018Am I free to go?\u2019 repeatedly until they answer you,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n \u201cYou are legally allowed to film ICE, as long as you do not interfere with an arrest,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n The New York mayor-elect issued a checklist of potential ways to thwart an ICE arrest.
