THE BRONX, N.Y. \u2014 Makhiye Washington poured in a season-high 22 points and Curtis broke open a close game with a huge third quarter to capture its first win via a 60-44 non-league decision over host Cardinal Spellman Sunday at the NYC Invitational.<\/p>\n
Jayden Faulkner (10 points), Wilmer Santos (nine points) and Curtis Tiu (nine points) also contributed offensively for the Warriors, who improved to 1-4.<\/p>\n
Washington\u2019s 11 first-half points helped give the Warriors a 25-24 lead at intermission, but the St. George school grabbed complete control immediately after halftime, exploding for 22 third-quarter points.<\/p>\n
Washington, who finished with a season-high three treys, led the charge with nine points while Santos and Tiu teamed for another nine markers to help Curtis take a commanding 47-27 lead into the final eight minutes.<\/p>\n
The 6-foot-5 Faulkner helped the Warriors stay comfortably ahead with seven points in the last quarter.<\/p>\n

THE BRONX, N.Y. \u2014 The Lions got off to a promising start, but the Rams chipped away behind senior Brian Kapfer (game-high 26 points) to pull out the CHSAA A division victory on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Matt Scalisi (15 points), JJ Yates (11 points), Matt Hanley (10 points) and Michael Abreu (eight points) led the way for Farrell, which dropped to 0-3 overall and in league play.<\/p>\n
The 6-foot-4 Kapfer connected on 9 of 12 free-throw attempts and added a trey for the 2-1 Rams (1-0 league). Liam Farrell and Jven Encarnacion teamed for another 15 points for the Bronx school, which buried 20 of 26 freebies in the contest (77%).<\/p>\n
Seniors Scalisi and Yates teamed for three first-quarter treys and the Lions raced to a 15-6 advantage at quarter\u2019s end. Although junior Jack Gomez added two more shots from behind the arc in the second, the Rams began to find their groove offensively. Kapfer tallied 11 in the second quarter to trim Farrell\u2019s lead to 29-24 at intermission.<\/p>\n
With the score tied at 37-37 entering the final period, the Rams put on a free-throw clinic as they went to the line 16 times. Kapfer, Encarnacion and Liam Farrell combined for 14 freebies in the final eight minutes to help pull out the win.<\/p>\n
Farrell was 9 for 12 from the charity stripe in the contest.<\/p>\n
Boys and Girls 80, Curtis 77 (OT)<\/p>\n
BROOKLYN, N.Y. \u2014 Amare Gaskin scored a career-high 23 points, but the Warriors dropped the PSAL 4A Brooklyn-Staten Island II division contest to the Kangaroos on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The Warriors, who also received offensive contributions from Faulkner (14 points), Washington (14 points) and Tiu (12 points), overcame an early double-digit deficit to force the extra session.<\/p>\n
Justin Scott scored a game-high 26 points and Sebastian Fon added 13 for Boys and Girls.<\/p>\n
The Warriors trailed 20-8 after one period, but thanks in part to Gaskin (17 points), Washington and Tiu (10 points apiece), they outscored the Kangaroos 57-45 over the next three periods to force overtime.<\/p>\n
Although William Johnson contributed six points in overtime for Curtis, the Kangaroos pulled away.
