New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will move into Gracie Mansion<\/a> once he takes office next month, he announced on Instagram.<\/a> In a Monday morning post, the city\u2019s next leader shared a picture of a model version of the historic mayoral residence, surrounded by lush foliage\u2014snapped at the holiday exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden<\/a> in the Bronx.<\/p>\n \u201cMy wife Rama and I have made the decision to move into Gracie Mansion in January,\u201d Mamdani said in the accompanying caption,<\/a> referencing wife Rama Duwaji. \u201cWe will miss much about our home in Astoria. Cooking dinner side by side in our kitchen, sharing a sleepy elevator ride with our neighbors in the evening, hearing music and laughter vibrate through the walls of the apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n Gracie Mansion.<\/p>\n The couple currently resides in a one-bedroom rental in northern Queens, where Mamdani has lived since at least 2018<\/a>. In the wake of the November election, he said the rent-stabilized unit was \u201ca little too small\u201d<\/a> for them, had sprung a leak, and also lacked a washer and dryer. He demurred when asked about whether they would move into Gracie Mansion, the official mayoral residence. But now, the couple has made their decision.<\/p>\n Dating to 1799, the Federal-style Gracie Mansion spans 11,000 square feet and sits within Carl Schurz Park on the Upper East Side, overlooking the East River. Initially a private home, the landmark became the city\u2019s executive residence in the 1940s at the urging of famed urban planner Robert Moses.
