\u201cGo look at other cities,\u201d Mayor Eric<\/a> Adams warns<\/a> of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani\u2019s plans to quit breaking up homeless encampments \u2014 and LA\u2019s MacArthur Park would be a great place to start.<\/p>\n

Once enjoyed by the mostly working-class, Latino community surrounding it, the park is now a dangerous, fentanyl-plagued drug den,<\/a> where homeless gather from far and wide to shoot up, light up, pass out \u2014 and often overdose.<\/p>\n

If the city provides sufficient assistance, Mamdani argues, it won\u2019t have to break up homeless camps.<\/p>\n

Hmm: LA City Councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez (a Democratic Socialist, as it happens) has ensured that a city-funded nonprofit hands out free food, crack-smoking supplies and fresh needles to MacArthur\u2019s homeless; critics credibly argue that\u2019s why they\u2019ve taken over the park.<\/p>\n

That is: Giving people the gear they need to keep doing drugs encourages them to keep doing drugs.<\/p>\n

Not that you need to go out west to see that: Gotham\u2019s own two \u201coverdose prevention centers,\u201d supposedly safe places to shoot up, have rushed dozens of \u201cclients\u201d to emergency rooms<\/a>, with at least two fatalities.<\/p>\n

Even if Mamdani\u2019s plan doesn\u2019t (yet) include handing out free supplies to junkies, allowing homeless camps to set up shop permanently across the city will eventually result in the same horrifying scenes.<\/p>\n

Which New York City parks will Mamdani let the homeless colonize?<\/p>\n

Prospect Park, where stroller-pushing Park Slope parents take their toddlers daily?<\/p>\n

How about Pelham Bay Park, a natural beauty in The Bronx? <\/p>\n

Will he invite the hoards of drug-using homeless to his new home\u2019s front steps at Carl Schurz Park?<\/p>\n

Van Cortland? Greenbelt? Tompkins Square? <\/p>\n

All of them?<\/p>\n

Adams warned the city will see \u201cidealism colliding with realism\u201d<\/a> if Mamdani sticks to his vow to leave the camps alone; sadly, the new mayor\u2019s transition team<\/a> seems to resemble the privileged NYU students who miss the homeless drug addicts<\/a> recently cleared from Washington Square Park, even as permanent residents cheer.<\/p>\n
