{"id":66683,"date":"2025-12-10T13:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T13:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/66683\/"},"modified":"2025-12-10T13:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T13:23:10","slug":"staten-island-hs-wrestling-petrides-continues-hot-start-to-season-with-win-vs-grand-street-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/66683\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island HS wrestling: Petrides continues hot start to season with win vs. Grand Street Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GILIXVEJ4NDAXMPGJJQZCYTSWM\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.\u2014 Following their move to PSAL 1A competition this offseason, the Petrides varsity wrestling team has made itself right at home in its new division, moving to 3-0 in league meets following a 43-33 victory over Grand Street Campus on Tuesday evening in Sunnyside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4KZBFDNYCFBIDM6D5X3FO3WNZU\">Olah, who recently captured the 1A title as Petrides\u2019 head football coach, said that although it\u2019s been a quick turnaround from the gridiron to the mats, he\u2019s been pleased with his team\u2019s efforts so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GQPNOW7EHJDSJBMMGUEI3O42VQ\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got a lot of guys who are making the flip from football to wrestling, so it\u2019s been nice to get off to a good start at 3-0,\u201d the HC said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ALRWGJTJ6VGIDCWM3MNZFKNC3I\">Olah\u2019s team may have won its first two meets by a combined 30 points, but he credited Grand Street for \u201chaving tough-nosed kids that are going to scrap and wrestle for a full six minutes,\u201d which made this their closest encounter yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OAGVGDRWVVCE3AQLSKNQJEPWTM\">In fact, Grand Street took two of the first three bouts, giving the Panthers a brief scare. But back-to-back wins from Rocky Molinare (126 lbs) and Bradley Munoz (132 lbs) soon put the Panthers in the driver\u2019s seat, as Petrides went on to win seven of the final ten matchups to secure the meet.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Petrides continues hot start vs. Grand Street Campus\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/AE4UEX5ROJESJO6JQY3LKTD4VM.JPG\"  \/>Petrides&#8217; Zayd Albaz looks to score a win on his opponent from Grand Street during a meeting between the two schools on Dec. 9, 2025.Michael O&#8217;Brien<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"453JONKLWZEQLOMEZ3KPXA2XPI\">Two individual performances Olah highlighted as key to the win over the Wolves were Julian Orellana (150 lbs) and Alexander Baez (215 lbs), both of whom secured victories that helped propel the team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PXAPM3CVUBGVPBLDPUWVZFDWUM\">\u201cJulian did a nice job today stepping up. He bumped up a weight class for us because they had a forfeit at his weight class, so as a senior leader, those are things you have to do sometimes. That was a really big spot for us,\u201d Olah explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YSSUF73NWZBRVPZWZ6XRHFTVFE\">As for Baez, who played under Olah\u2019s guidance in the fall, the HC noted, \u201cAlex played football with me on varsity, and he\u2019s getting himself into shape right now\u2014you can see that. That was a great six-minute match for him to finish and put us in a good spot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Petrides continues hot start vs. Grand Street Campus\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/LXYAIOZXTVCMFEIWZMXJDECUWM.JPG\"  \/>Petrides&#8217; Gio Molinare locks up with his opponent from Grand Street Campus during a meeting between the two schools on Dec. 9, 2025.Michael O&#8217;Brien<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HROBIC267ZGXZK6U46ZYBNTI3Y\">Now with a solid early-season sample size to gauge what\u2019s working well and what needs improvement among his wrestlers, Olah pointed to two key areas: mat awareness and conditioning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OIMSO3IKJJCGJOJRMG5VCDVGZQ\">\u201cOne thing looking good is mat awareness\u2014where we are on the mat. You kind of know what each individual is good at, and they have within themselves what they should be doing right now. I think that looks really good,&#8221; Olah shared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QJXCXD4EP5HZ7MIPIVH6QQ2F3M\">\u201cBut early on, we have to work on our conditioning. You can see that. This is really the second full week of practice that we\u2019re cranking that stuff out, so the conditioning piece will come.
