STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014Pianist Jacqueline Schwab\u2019s winter tide program \u201cBe the Light\u201d is set for Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Staten Island located in New Brighton.<\/p>\n
Inspired by poet Amanda Gorman\u2019s \u201cThere is always light, if only we\u2019re brave enough to see it, if only we\u2019re brave enough to be it,\u201d \u201cBe the Light\u201d celebrates music \u201cembracing hope, inner strength and change.\u201d<\/p>\n
Schwab\u2019s program of soulful traditional Appalachian carols, sea island spirituals and well-known, vintage New England holiday standards, along with Hanukkah (\u201cFestival of Lights\u201d) tunes, and Cuban, Ukrainian, American Paul Simon, and other \u201cmusic of transformation,\u201d has been described as an oasis of quiet reflection, peace and joy \u201camidst this busy season in our challenging times.\u201d<\/p>\n
The program is being sponsored by the Staten Island Philharmonic Orchestra.<\/p>\n
Schwab will also share stories about how historical tunes can speak to individuals in today\u2019s world and \u201chelp create a ripple effect empowering the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
Though she resides in Boston, Schwab lived on Staten Island when her husband, Edmund Robinson, was interim minister of the Unitarian Church.<\/p>\n
A LITTLE ABOUT SCHWAB<\/p>\n
A solo pianist for many of Ken Burns documentaries, folks can hear Schwab in Burns\u2019 latest series, \u201cThe American Revolution\u201d airing on WNET Channel Thirteen, his Grammy-award winning \u201cCivil War\u201d and many others, as well as in other PBS documentaries, such as \u201cThe Irish in America–the Long Journey Home and New York–A Documentary Film.\u201d<\/p>\n
Schwab has performed at the White House for President Bill Clinton and one national PBS with The American Pops Orchestra. She also has accompanied Scottish singer Jean Redpath on public radio\u2019s \u201cA Prairie Home Companion\u201d and on CBS\u2019s \u201cLate Show with David Letterman.\u201d <\/p>\n
Schwab also is well known in the dance world for her playing with the Bare Necessities ensemble. <\/p>\n
Her most recent solo album \u201cI Lift My Lamp–Illuminations from Immigrant America\u201d celebrates vintage music from American immigrants. <\/p>\n
The Unitarian Church of Staten Island is located at 312 Fillmore St.<\/p>\n
