{"id":66944,"date":"2025-12-10T17:39:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T17:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/66944\/"},"modified":"2025-12-10T17:39:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T17:39:07","slug":"nypd-charges-driver-who-killed-bridge-repairman-in-upper-manhattan-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/66944\/","title":{"rendered":"NYPD charges driver who killed bridge repairman in upper Manhattan crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A driver who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2024\/08\/14\/fatally-struck-worker-on-nyc-bridge-was-new-dad-who-feared-for-his-safety-wife\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed a construction worker repairing Manhattan\u2019s Washington Bridge<\/a> more than 16 months ago has been charged with reckless driving, police said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus Juarez has also been charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care in the crash that caused the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2024\/08\/05\/worker-making-repairs-to-nyc-bridge-fatally-struck-by-suv-driver\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">death of Herb Henry Alesna, 41,<\/a> on Aug. 2, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Alesna was repairing the Washington Bridge, connecting Washington Heights to the Bronx around 10:20 p.m. when Juarez, 36, who was heading into Manhattan, made a sudden lane change on the bridge, cops said.<\/p>\n<p>Juarez\u2019s Dodge Durango slammed into a Toyota Highlander in the left lane, then careened back to the right lane, where it slammed into a construction truck Alesna was standing next to.<\/p>\n<p>Alesna died at the scene, leaving behind a wife and infant child.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Herb Henry Alesna is pictured with his wife, Eva Gyorka, and their daughter Kaia in an undated photo. (GoFundMe)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey took away a man\u2019s life who had a 1-year-old daughter,\u201d Alesna\u2019s widow Eva Gyerko, told the Daily News, her voice breaking, at the time of the crash. \u201cHow do you go on with life not having him around?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was my person,\u201d she added. \u201cHe was my soulmate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Juarez and the Toyota driver weren\u2019t injured in the crash.<\/p>\n<p>After an exhaustive investigation, detectives from the NYPD\u2019s Collision Investigation Squad charged Juarez on Tuesday. He was released without bail following his arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court.<\/p>\n<p>Juarez lives in Washington Heights, about two miles from the Washington Bridge. Alesna lived in Maspeth, Queens, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are still in shock and disbelief that he was taken from us so sudden,\u201d Gyerko said. \u201cIt\u2019s been very tough to realize that he won\u2019t be coming home and his daughter will grow up without her papa.
