Photo: Mary Frost, Brooklyn Eagle<\/p>\n<p>BROOKLYN HEIGHTS \u2014 Street milling and resurfacing has just about wrapped up in Brooklyn Heights and nearby neighborhoods after several busy \u2014 and noisy \u2014 weeks throughout November and early December.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Work for this week, as of press deadline, included a section of Cranberry Street in the north Heights, and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/downloads\/pdf\/concretesch.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concrete repair<\/a> on Henry Street near Joralemon Street.<\/p>\n<p>The seemingly-nonstop milling impacted some work-from-home residents, who temporarily decamped to coffee shops and the library in search of peace \u2014 but most agree the pothole-free streets were worth the annoyance, and the new surfaces should be smooth for years to come.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-355103\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Street-repaving-Heights-02-Henry-St-Mary-Frost-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"The bumpy surface of Henry Street near Orange Street after milling. Photo: Mary Frost, Brooklyn Eagle<\/p>\n<p>Once a street has been resurfaced, it is considered \u201cprotected\u201d from further resurfacing for five years. If utilities need to dig into a protected street, they pay more for the privilege.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to the Department of Transportation for prioritizing street repair work across our neighborhood,\u201d the Brooklyn Heights Association said in its newsletter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a reason why it seemed like so many local streets were being milled at the same time, according to the New York City Department of Transportation: This is how road resurfacing works. Photo: Mary Frost, Brooklyn Eagle<\/p>\n<p>During milling \u2014 the noisy part \u2014 the surface layer of the street is ground off. In resurfacing, hot asphalt is laid down atop the roadway and rolled smooth with a road roller.
