{"id":68270,"date":"2025-12-12T01:55:19","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T01:55:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/68270\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T01:55:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T01:55:19","slug":"schumer-bid-to-extend-obamacare-credits-blocked-by-senate-republicans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/68270\/","title":{"rendered":"Schumer bid to extend ObamaCare credits blocked by Senate Republicans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate rejected a Democratic bid to extend expiring COVID-era Affordable Care Act subsidies for three years \u2014 dealing a final defeat to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/07\/us-news\/chuck-schumer-floats-compromise-on-obamacare-subsidies-to-end-shutdown\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer<\/a> (D-NY) after he and his party forced a six-week shutdown of the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, led by Schumer, had forced the 43-day <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/12\/us-news\/house-votes-to-end-unprecedented-government-shutdown-after-42-days\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suspension of operations<\/a> earlier this fall in an attempt to get Republicans to agree to extend the subsidies, which were implemented as part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act \u2014 passed by Congress without a single GOP vote \u2014 and signed into law by President Biden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s avert a disaster,\u201d the Brooklyn native implored his colleagues ahead of the vote. \u201cThe American people are watching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans, led by Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), had rejected an extension of the subsidies as out of the question without restrictions like income qualfications and safeguards against potential fraud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently, they think that a three-year extension with no reforms to try and disguise the real impact of ObamaCare\u2019s spiraling costs is actually a plan,\u201d Thune said in his floor remarks. \u201cI don\u2019t know how you can call it a plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moments earlier, lawmakers voted to block advancement of a bill proposed by Sens. <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/17\/us-news\/senate-healthcare-goper-courts-dems-on-obamacare-change-a-lot-of-appeal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Cassidy (R-La.)<\/a> and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) that would have scrapped the subsidies in favor of health savings accounts (HSAs) that will be funded for the next two years.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate voted to block advancement of a bill proposed by Sens. AP<\/p>\n<p>In both instances, 51 senators voted to begin debate on the bill in question with 48 opposed. <\/p>\n<p>Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) joined all 47 Democrats to block the Cassidy-Crapo plan, while GOPers Susan Collins of Maine, Josh Hawley of Missouri, and Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan of Alaska voted to advance the Schumer plan.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Members of both parties did agree on one thing: There is not enough time left before lawmakers leave DC for the holidays to avert premium hikes for approximately 22 million Americans enrolled in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/03\/us-news\/obamacare-subsidies-granted-without-documentation-to-90-of-fake-accounts-set-up-by-government-watchdog\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Affordable Care Act <\/a>exchanges, whose bills are due to double on average.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too complicated and too difficult to get done in the limited time that we have left,\u201d Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur bill is the last train to leave the station,\u201d Schumer warned on the floor. \u201cAfter this, we will not have time to try again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the shutdown ended Nov. 13 after eight Democrats and Dem-aligned independents voted to reopen the government, Republicans and Democrats have yet to engage in meaningful talks on a solution to the premium rises.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) has claimed initial talks broke down when Republicans demanded language adding new limits on abortion coverage that King called a \u201cred line\u201d for Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>In lieu of the subsidies, the Cassidy-Crapo proposal would have offered adults earning up to 700% of the federal poverty level ($109,550 for single people) to access $1,000 per year in a tax-advantaged HSA if they\u2019re younger than 50.<\/p>\n<p>For those aged 50 to 64, the amount in the HSA would have risen to $1,500 per year.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump told reporters on Air Force One Tuesday that \u201cI like the concept,\u201d but stopped short of giving his full endorsement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the idea of money going directly to the people, not to the insurance companies, going directly to the people. It can be in the health savings account; it can be a number of different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schumer and Senate Democrats disagreed, with the Brooklyn native saying: \u201cUnder the Republican plan, the big idea is essentially to hand people about $80 a month and wish them good luck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The minority leader added in his floor remarks that the only viable plans to access the HSA money have deductibles of $7,000 or more. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, to get that $80 a month, you\u2019re going to pay $7,000 off the top before you even get any health insurance,\u201d he said. \u201cHow ridiculous. How stingy.
