{"id":70265,"date":"2025-12-14T12:25:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-14T12:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/70265\/"},"modified":"2025-12-14T12:25:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-14T12:25:09","slug":"high-rise-slated-for-former-home-of-iconic-diner-beloved-wine-shop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/70265\/","title":{"rendered":"High-rise slated for former home of iconic diner, beloved wine shop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QIPPZE57HNF5LCJUSTJWT4B4L4\">A long-vacant building strip in St. George containing the remnants an iconic diner and a beloved wine shop is set to be the new home of an eight-story, mixed-use building, the Advance\/SILive.com has learned. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H42GYPSA3RHSTPMB2VM53QYGOU\">New York City Buildings Department records show that a demolition permit has been issued for the Bay Street property that was once home to the Karl\u2019s Klipper diner, Honor Wines and other popular businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JU6IIBK7VJAK3A5NNQD4ATN2AU\">A protective green fence has been installed at the long-vacant site, encompassing four storefronts. A stationary store and a barbershop were also on the block at various times. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"nws high-rise\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/67A7GZUAHVHQPFDHBIB7TIOMRQ.JPG\"  \/>An eight-story building containing residential and commercial space is slated for this location on Bay Street in St. George.Staten Island Advance | Tom Wrobleski<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZPTXEU23B5GE3OT45KWERUERGI\">Buildings approved the application to build the high-rise in March, the department said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VXG56VFBINCOLFHU3ZTTE6TPSU\">Buildings said that construction permits for the new structure have not been issued at this time because the applicant has yet to request them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FYTQ2V45ERDF5GQE4MWLSICW2M\">It is not known when demolition will begin at the site. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LSDVKPCLQZDNBOSS6QJG7RCVXM\">A Buildings Department filing shows that the building will have 39,537 square feet of residential space and 2,614 square feet of commercial space. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GPGGUQYSTZF3PHD4CTNP7GSHOQ\">The architectural firm listed on Buildings documents, Raymond Chan Architect P.C., of Queens, did not return Advance\/SILive requests for comment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AH4VJUZZGVE6PH46QI56UMXACU\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2023\/10\/beloved-former-restaurant-is-a-haunting-sight-in-this-staten-island-neighborhood-have-a-look-inside.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2023\/10\/beloved-former-restaurant-is-a-haunting-sight-in-this-staten-island-neighborhood-have-a-look-inside.html\">After a 12-year run at the location, Karl\u2019s Klipper served its final meal on Dec. 20, 2016. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y6FESQCAOBHR7KJLJP6KCFHEWM\">The Klipper was known for its food and bar scene and was also a popular spot for musical performances and political and community gatherings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LLC5ILTMSRHBZP43YX7HNYXLVA\">The 40 Bay St. location for nearly 80 years was home to one popular borough eatery and bar after another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SJ2PI5DZFVEEFKPCQFZGMICTUU\">Before the Klipper, the St. George Clipper was on the same spot. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O3AWS36QOJE4BPF5BEY6AT473A\">That restaurant, including its signature cocktail lounge, opened for business around 1941, according to Advance records, and closed in 1979.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Karls Klipper\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/JBPIKT42YNBWXL4YW3KRWS3OWM.jpg\"  \/>The St. George Clipper was located at 40 Bay Street in St. George, Staten Island. It was in business from approximately 1941 to 1979.
