McNeil\/Times Union<\/p>\n<p>POESTENKILL\u00a0\u2014 Several residents have sent a clear\u00a0message to the Town Board: We don\u2019t want government\u00a0surveillance cameras in Poestenkill.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>And the Town Board members listened,\u00a0rejecting a proposal during a meeting on Thursday to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/news\/article\/sheriff-proposal-plate-reader-poestenkill-21206976.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">install automated license plate readers on municipal property<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The Rensselaer County Sheriff\u2019s Office had requested permission to place\u00a0the technology designed to identify criminal suspects at Poestenkill Town Hall, facing a five-way intersection. Residents were quick to raise privacy concerns online, many of which were echoed at the recent meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re losing our rights in this country, and this is just another example of it,\u201d Scott J. Ring, also of Hinkle Road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Flock Safety, which would have provided those cameras, has readers in more than 5,000 communities and 4,800 agencies nationwide. It allows agencies within the national network to store and share data up to 30 days, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flocksafety.com\/products\/license-plate-readers\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the company\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rensselaer County Sheriff Kyle Bourgault and Capt. Justin Walraed pitched the concept as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/news\/article\/sheriff-proposal-plate-reader-poestenkill-21206976.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">limited-use means of protecting rural public safety <\/a>in lieu of getting state approval to set up readers closer to highly trafficked, New York-owned thoroughfares.<\/p>\n<p>But many residents have argued that the technology clashed with the sleepy town\u2019s charm and would open up the door to abuse. Town Supervisor Tom Russell said in an interview that he received letters, emails and phone calls from residents opposed to the measure, and only saw a few comments in support of it on social media.<\/p>\n<p>The outgoing Democrat told reporters on Thursday that he wanted to remain objective before making a decision on the issue. According to him, he only recently learned about the technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI listened to what the sheriff said out of courtesy to get better educated and then listened to various input from residents who looked up articles, sent them in and read through them to be able to be educated and make the correct decision,\u201d Russell said.<\/p>\n<p>Town lawmakers didn\u2019t have a resolution on the matter prepared at the start of the meeting. They voted to draft a rejection letter to the Rensselaer County Sheriff\u2019s Office only after a slew of opponents, including former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regional Administrator Judith Enck, spoke against it during public comment.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart\u2019s Shops also declined a proposal from\u00a0the sheriff\u2019s office\u00a0in August to place readers at five retail locations across Rensselaer County and rejected a similar request from the Hudson Police Department in Columbia County.<\/p>\n<p>According to Cooper, it wasn\u2019t clear how the readers would be maintained, and a number of Rensselaer County customers had expressed concerns to the company since news of the proposal surfaced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were too many uncertainties, and we just decided to pass,\u201d Cooper said.<\/p>\n<p>Bourgault didn\u2019t respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The Rensselaer County Sheriff\u2019s Office has had some success pitching the readers. Petersburgh lawmakers recently approved the agency\u2019s\u00a0request to install license plate recognition systems at the town\u2019s municipal complex.<\/p>\n<p>Petersburgh Town Supervisor Heinz H. Noeding considers the move, made without controversy, vital to fighting drug trafficking from neighboring Massachusetts and Vermont.
